MANILA, Philippines – In a stunning display of political defiance, Vice President Sara Duterte, during her arraignment proceedings on Friday, September 11, on grave threats charges, unleashed a scathing attack on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., directly calling for his resignation. Duterte, facing charges related to controversial statements made in November 2024, did not mince words, delivering a forceful condemnation that reverberated through the court and beyond.

The Vice President’s unreserved statement, made amidst her legal challenges, accused President Marcos Jr. of grave misconduct:

“Tandaan ninyo, patuloy tayong manawagan ng paglayas ng problema ng ating bayan na ang pangalan ay Bongbong Marcos. Resign! Umalis ka diyan! Sinungaling ka, abusado ka, korap ka.”

(Remember this, we will continue to call for the departure of the problem of our nation whose name is Bongbong Marcos. Resign! Get out of there! You are a liar, an abuser, you are corrupt.)

This incendiary declaration marks a dramatic escalation in the ongoing political tensions surrounding the Vice President. The Vice President’s arraignment on three counts of grave threats was deferred by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court. Her lawyer, Paul Lawrence Lim, confirmed the postponement by RTC Branch 98, citing “sensitive” matters and “respect for the court,” while declining further specifics.

Lim stated, “Hiningi namin na ipagpaliban muna yung kanyang arraignment dahil sa ilang mga dahilan. Ito ay pinagbigyan ng korte.” (We asked that her arraignment be deferred for a number of reasons. This was allowed by the court.)

He further elaborated, “Ngayon, pansamantala, habang ito ay pinag-iisipan pa niya yung aming mosyon, hindi muna matutuloy yung kanyang arraignment, so suspended muna.” (For now, while the court is considering our motion, her arraignment is suspended.)

The charges against Duterte stem from her November 2024 remarks, where she allegedly claimed to have contacted an assassin to target President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and then-House Speaker Martin Romualdez, contingent on her own demise. These same statements form the basis for one of the Articles of Impeachment currently being tried before the Senate.

Despite challenging the court’s jurisdiction, Lim asserted, “Ang bise presidente naman ay sumusunod sa batas kahit kinikwestyon niya yung jurisdiction ng korte.” (The Vice President follows the law even if she questions the jurisdiction of the court.)

Duterte’s legal team has also moved to seek a temporary restraining order from the Supreme Court, aiming to halt the Quezon City court proceedings, citing her alleged immunity from suit as an impeachable official.
