Israeli Forces and Settlers Intensify Campaign to Forcibly Expel 47 Palestinian Families in Jordan Valley

RAS AL-AHMAR, JORDAN VALLEY – Forty-seven Palestinian Bedouin families in Ras al-Ahmar, southeast of Tubas, face imminent forced displacement as Israeli forces enact a stringent military blockade and settlers issue direct evacuation demands. This intensified pressure is part of a calculated effort to compel residents to abandon their homes and ancestral lands in the northern Jordan Valley.

For over a month, Israeli forces have systematically sealed off the community’s entrances, critically restricting access to vital resources, including water, food, livestock feed, and all humanitarian aid. This isolation escalated following “final evacuation notices” delivered by Israeli settlers, ordering all families to vacate the area by the evening of October 11, 2026.

Palestinian rights organizations warn that the coordinated military closures, settler intimidation, and deliberate deprivation of essential supplies constitute a strategy designed to forcibly displace these families.

Entire Bedouin Community Cut Off

Restrictions on movement in Ras al-Ahmar have progressively tightened over the past three years, with a sharp deterioration commencing in mid-September. Israeli forces established new roadblocks and intensified control over access routes, culminating in the excavation of a deep trench across the sole remaining road connecting the community to neighboring areas. This act has effectively severed Ras al-Ahmar from the outside world.

Residents report that this blockade has prevented the entry of water tankers, livestock feed suppliers, and humanitarian teams. Furthermore, Israeli forces have barred Palestinian solidarity activists and aid workers while detaining Palestinians and driving away local and international activists attempting to assist the isolated families. The Al-Baidar Organization for the Defense of Bedouin Rights underscores the residents’ dire situation, calling for urgent legal and humanitarian intervention to dismantle the blockade and safeguard the families from forced displacement.

Critical Loss of Grazing Land Threatens Livelihoods

Livestock herding and pastoral agriculture are the economic mainstays for families in Ras al-Ahmar, who have historically relied on surrounding lands for grazing. Over generations, the community has had access to approximately 360,000 dunams (about 89,000 acres) of grazing land. However, Israeli military restrictions, expanding settlement activity, and land-access prohibitions have systematically stripped residents of roughly 90% of these vital areas.

This devastating loss has severely crippled the local pastoral economy, forcing herders to rely increasingly on expensive purchased animal feed amidst declining incomes. The latest military blockade exacerbates these conditions by preventing feed and other essential supplies from entering the community, pushing livestock towards critical shortages of water and food and threatening the survival of entire herds. Rights groups indicate that some families have already been forced to leave as their livelihoods became unsustainable.

Weaponizing Water Shortages to Exert Pressure

Access to water, a critical necessity in the arid Jordan Valley for both residents and livestock, has become a potent tool of pressure. Palestinian sources report that Israeli forces and settlers have damaged or severed water lines and prevented water tankers from entering for approximately a month. The resulting severe shortages jeopardize dozens of families and hundreds of animals, leading to deteriorating sanitation, mounting health concerns, and significant challenges for herders to sustain their livestock.

Advocates warn that denying a community access to water and other basic necessities deliberately creates uninhabitable conditions, compelling residents to abandon their land. For Ras al-Ahmar, this pressure is particularly acute, as homes, livelihoods, and livestock are inextricably linked to continued access to the surrounding land. Residents are confronted with a devastating choice: endure increasingly perilous conditions or relinquish the community their families have built.

Settler Violence and Military Restrictions Drive West Bank Displacement

Human rights organizations contend that the crisis in Ras al-Ahmar is not isolated but rather indicative of a broader campaign of Israeli military restrictions and settler violence targeting Palestinian communities across the occupied West Bank. Between January and September 2026, Palestinian official bodies and monitoring organizations documented 5,561 settler attacks against Palestinians, their land, and property. These attacks coincide with expanding settlement activity, limitations on agricultural access, and repeated threats against Palestinian communities.

Bedouin and herding communities in the Jordan Valley are particularly vulnerable due to their reliance on grazing lands, water sources, and roads, all of which fall under Israeli control. Rights groups highlight that settler intimidation and military closures are working in concert to dispossess Palestinians from strategically important areas. The Al-Baidar Organization characterizes the pressure on Ras al-Ahmar as part of a campaign of forced displacement and “silent ethnic cleansing” in the northern Jordan Valley.

Urgent International Intervention Demanded

Palestinian human rights organizations are urgently appealing for immediate international action to protect the 47 families facing expulsion. They implore humanitarian agencies, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, to intervene and restore access to water, food, animal feed, and essential medical and humanitarian services. They further demand an end to the military blockade, protection from settler attacks, and measures to prevent the forced transfer of residents.

Under international humanitarian law, the forcible transfer of protected civilians from occupied territory is strictly prohibited, save for narrowly defined circumstances related to their security or imperative military reasons. For the families of Ras al-Ahmar, the immediate struggle is to remain on their land while securing the fundamental necessities for survival. With roads blocked, water supplies disrupted, and most grazing areas inaccessible, residents face escalating pressure to leave a community whose very future hangs in the balance.
