TREMONTON, Utah – Tragedy struck the Tremonton-Garland Police Department Sunday night when two officers were shot and killed while attending to a domestic disturbance here, located approximately 75 miles north of Salt Lake City.

Killed were Sgt. Lee Sorensen, 56, and Officer Eric Estrada, 31.

Authorities reported that the officers were dispatched following several 911 hang-up calls originating from a resident.

Upon arrival, the first officer encountered immediate gunfire and was fatally shot.

The second officer, responding to the scene, also fell victim to the same assailant.

In addition to the officers, a deputy from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office and a police canine were injured during the gunfire but were expected to recover.

The suspect, whose identity has not been released pending further investigation, is currently in custody and facing charges of aggravated murder.

Reports indicate that bystanders played a crucial role in persuading the suspect to surrender his weapon.

Brigham City Police Chief Chad Reyes praised the fallen officers, stating, “These officers are definitely heroes.”

In a gesture of respect, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff to honor the service and sacrifice of the deceased officers.

Sgt. Sorensen had dedicated 17 years to law enforcement and had recently received a promotion, while Officer Estrada was a former corrections officer known for his commitment to community engagement.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
