Ateneo Tragedy: Demand for Justice and Accountability

MANILA, Philippines – Profound grief has gripped the Ateneo de Manila University community following the tragic drowning deaths of two promising varsity basketball players, Divine Adili, 21, and Rene Clert Baterbonia, 19.

The incident, which occurred on June 8, 2026, during a team-building activity in the coastal waters of Dipaculao, Aurora, has ignited a fierce demand for justice from distraught families and triggered a multifaceted investigation by authorities.

Adili, a formidable force on the court, had already left an indelible mark in UAAP Season 88, averaging 8.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists.

Baterbonia, a rising star from Davao and Palarong Pambansa representative, was poised for his debut with the Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 89. Both promising careers were tragically cut short.

Initial reports from the Police Regional Office 3 (PRO 3) indicated that the athletes were swept by a strong current into deeper waters while swimming. However, the precise circumstances leading to their deaths are now under intense scrutiny as multiple agencies investigate further.

Forensic Examination Underway Amid Negligence Inquiry

Investigators are analyzing retrieved CCTV footage from the resort, rescue teams, and the local disaster response office. Police Major Lorena Bautista, spokesperson for the Aurora Provincial Police Office, confirmed the acquisition of this crucial video evidence, stating on Super Radyo dzBB, “These are currently undergoing forensic examination,” anticipating a clearer timeline of events.

The incident unfolded around 2:40 p.m. last Monday when a powerful rip current swept Baterbonia and Adili away. Responders from the Dipaculao Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and a resort lifeguard reported the victims being carried towards deeper waters. Baterbonia was recovered at 3:35 p.m., followed by Adili at 3:45 p.m. Both were rushed to Aurora Memorial Hospital, but efforts to revive them were unsuccessful.

While initial findings point to accidental drowning, law enforcement agencies are collaboratively probing potential negligence by the resort management and the school administration.

“Our different law enforcement agencies are working together to see if there is any negligence on the part of these involved establishments and the school administration,” Major Bautista emphasized. This signals a broadening inquiry into safety protocols, supervision, and the overall duty of care exercised by both entities.

Authorities have confirmed no signs of foul play, no weights attached to the bodies, and no visible injuries indicative of violence. Weather conditions at the time were also deemed normal.

Families Demand Independent Probe and Accountability

The heartbroken mother of Rene Baterbonia has made a resonant plea for a comprehensive investigation, a sentiment echoed by Ateneo de Manila University’s Sanggunian (student government), which has also demanded a meticulous inquiry. The university, alongside the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and the UAAP, has extended profound condolences.

Adding a critical layer to the pursuit of truth, Baterbonia’s family, now legally represented by Torreon and Partners and the Torreon and Bondoc Law Firm, has formally written to Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman John Patrick Gregorio. Their letter, dated June 9, 2026, demands a comprehensive, multi-stakeholder fact-finding review and an independent probe.

The family is seeking immediate access to the incident site for independent aquatic safety and forensic experts. Crucially, they call for a total lockdown and preservation of all physical evidence, permits, waivers, and communications related to the team-building event.

Further underscoring the gravity and public interest, the Department of Justice has ordered a National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) probe.

As the forensic examination of the CCTV footage progresses and multiple law enforcement agencies collaborate, the focus remains on uncovering all factors that contributed to this tragedy and ensuring accountability where negligence may be found.

The basketball world and the nation await answers, hoping for a clear understanding of what transpired and for justice to be served for these two young lives lost too soon. Baterbonia’s family has reportedly requested an autopsy, while Adili’s remains are to be repatriated to Nigeria.
