PARIS — In a brazen act that shocked the world, thieves wielding power tools infiltrated the Louvre Museum on Sunday (October 19, 2025), making off with priceless jewelry in a meticulously planned, seven-minute heist.

The robbery, executed in broad daylight, forced the museum’s immediate closure and triggered a city-wide manhunt.

Authorities confirmed the thieves accessed the museum via a furniture hoist, scaling the exterior before using power tools to breach the gallery housing France’s crown jewels.

The recovered crown of Empress Eugenie, adorned with 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds, was found damaged near the scene.

“The speed and precision of this operation suggest a high level of planning and expertise,” stated a source close to the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“The fact that they targeted the crown jewels indicates a clear understanding of the Louvre’s most valuable assets.”

While the full extent of the stolen items remains under investigation, the incident has raised serious questions about security protocols at the world’s most visited museum.

The Louvre, which attracted nine million visitors last year, houses invaluable treasures, including the Mona Lisa, now under renewed scrutiny regarding its protection.

The latest incident follows a string of recent museum heists in Paris, including a September theft of €600,000 worth of gold samples from the Natural History Museum and a November 2024 robbery involving axes and baseball bats at the Cognacq-Jay Museum.

These incidents have prompted calls for increased security measures and a reevaluation of museum security strategies across the city.

The Paris prosecutor’s office has launched a full investigation, while the Louvre remains closed as authorities assess the damage and implement enhanced security measures.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of even the most iconic cultural institutions in the face of determined and sophisticated criminals.
