GAZA CITY, Palestine – A fragile ceasefire brokered by the Trump administration is teetering on the brink as violence flares in Gaza, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of President Trump’s peace plan and the human cost of its implementation.

Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are in Israel, attempting to salvage the agreement amid escalating tensions and a growing humanitarian crisis.

While Trump maintains that the ceasefire is holding, reports from the ground paint a grim picture.

Israeli airstrikes targeting Hamas continue, and the reopening of aid crossings has been hampered by bureaucratic hurdles and restricted access for international media.

Ceasefire on Life Support

The ceasefire faces its gravest test after the deaths of two Israeli soldiers triggered retaliatory Israel Defense Forces (IDF) strikes across Gaza, briefly halting vital aid deliveries.

Despite the resumption of aid through the Kerem Shalom crossing, the time taken to reach desperate civilians remains woefully inadequate, according to UN officials.

“While we are relieved the crossings are open, bureaucratic constraints are severely hindering our ability to deliver aid,” said Sam Rose of the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency.

Deadly Confusion at the “Yellow Line”

Compounding the crisis is the confusion surrounding the IDF’s newly established “Yellow Line,” marking its withdrawal zone.

Despite efforts to delineate the boundary, deadly incidents have occurred as Palestinians inadvertently cross the line.

Tragically, on Friday, October 17, 2025, 11 members of the Abu Shaaban family, including seven children, were killed by Israeli tank fire near Shejaiya.

The IDF claims it was responding to perceived threats, but local sources dispute this account, fueling outrage and distrust.

The incident highlights the devastating consequences of unclear boundaries and the urgent need for better communication with the civilian population.

Mounting Death Toll and Humanitarian Catastrophe

The Hamas-run Health Ministry reports a staggering death toll of over 68,000 since the conflict escalated in October 2023, with many victims still trapped under rubble.

The Rafah crossing remains closed, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

US Pushes for Progress Amidst Skepticism

Despite the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis, US envoys Kushner and Witkoff are pushing for the implementation of the second phase of Trump’s peace plan, including the establishment of an interim government in Gaza and the deployment of an international stabilization force.

However, Israel insists that negotiations cannot commence until all deceased hostages are returned.

Vice President JD Vance is expected to arrive in Israel on Monday, signaling the US commitment to the region.

However, with civilian casualties mounting and the ceasefire hanging by a thread, the long-term viability of Trump’s peace plan is facing increasing scrutiny.

The deaths of Palestinian children, in particular, are fueling international condemnation and raising serious questions about the human cost of the ongoing conflict.

The question remains: can the US brokers salvage the situation before it spirals further into a full-blown humanitarian disaster?
