PARIS – In an unprecedented downfall, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has begun serving a five-year prison sentence for criminal conspiracy, becoming the first former head of state from a European Union nation to be jailed and the first postwar French leader to face such a fate.

The conviction stems from a scheme to illicitly finance his successful 2007 presidential campaign with funds from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.

Sarkozy, accompanied by his wife Carla Bruni, made a carefully choreographed departure from his Paris residence, greeted by supporters chanting for his release.

Moments before entering La Santé prison, he maintained his innocence on social media, decrying the proceedings as a “scandal.”

The former president’s conviction carries particular weight, with the presiding judge describing the case as one of “exceptional gravity” that severely undermines public trust in the political system.

While acquitted on other charges related to corruption and illegal funding, Sarkozy’s legal team has already launched an appeal.

Sarkozy is the first former head of state from an EU nation to serve time behind bars.

His conviction centers on accepting illicit campaign financing from former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Polls show a majority of French citizens believe the sentence is justified, but Sarkozy retains a loyal base of support.

President Emmanuel Macron met with Sarkozy shortly before his imprisonment, drawing criticism for potentially influencing the justice system.

Sarkozy, who will likely be placed in solitary confinement for his safety, has packed personal items, including family photos and books, with plans to write during his detention.

His imprisonment marks a stunning fall from grace for a once-dominant figure in French politics.

His appeal process will be closely watched as he navigates this unprecedented chapter, joining a list of notorious inmates at La Santé prison.

The case raises profound questions about political ethics, campaign finance, and the accountability of those in power.
