MANILA, Philippines – A false fire alarm at the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Air Traffic Management (ATM) Center in Pasay City caused significant disruptions to air travel early Tuesday morning, delaying 59 commercial and cargo flights and impacting thousands of passengers.

The incident, which began around 1:24 a.m. on November 11, prompted the activation of contingency plans, including a temporary halt to all take-offs and landings at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

While normal operations resumed by 2:50 a.m., with all restrictions lifted by 3:16 a.m., the ripple effect of the delays left many travelers stranded and frustrated.

CAAP spokesman Eric Apolonio said the air traffic controllers’ swift and professional response ensured that flight safety was never compromised.

CAAP Director General Raul del Rosario commended the team’s actions, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of aviation safety.

“The incident underscores our continued commitment to maintaining the highest standards of aviation safety and readiness,” Del Rosario said in a statement.

He added that an internal investigation would be conducted to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The probe is aligned with directives from President Marcos and Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez.
