CAVITE, Philippines – On June 12, 1898, in the heat of revolution, General Emilio Aguinaldo declared Philippine independence from Spanish colonial rule in Cavite el Viejo (now Kawit).

This historic proclamation symbolizes the emergence of a sovereign nation, a moment forever etched in the hearts and minds of Filipinos.

However, over a century later, the question lingers: Is the Philippines genuinely free?

Though the shackles of colonialism have been cast aside, a new form of servitude persists.

Many Filipinos, compelled by dire economic circumstances, find themselves in foreign lands as domestic workers, often facing exploitation and abuse.

Their struggles highlight a continuing fight for economic stability, casting a shadow over the ideals celebrated on that momentous day.

Furthermore, the vision of a fully independent Philippines is undermined by the pervasive influence of kakistocracy – a government led by the least qualified or most unscrupulous.

Rampant corruption remains a deep-seated issue, draining national resources, hindering progress, and eroding the foundations of a fair and just society.

This internal conflict, a struggle against self-inflicted challenges, has hampered the Filipino people’s ability to fully embrace the freedom they fought so hard to achieve.

Today, 127 years later, the economy heavily relies on the remittances of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), often hailed as modern-day heroes, whose sacrifices sustain the nation’s economy.

Meanwhile, corrupt officials thrive on the toils and sufferings of those laboring abroad.

Thus, the legacy of June 12, 1898, is a complex narrative. It embodies bravery, resilience, and an unwavering quest for self-determination.

Yet, it also serves as a poignant reminder that true freedom encompasses more than just political independence – it requires economic empowerment, social justice, and a government that genuinely serves its people.

Until these hurdles are addressed, the promise of independence remains an unfulfilled aspiration – a continuous call to action for a nation still in pursuit of genuine freedom.
