MANILA, Philippines – Responding to escalating community concerns, Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado has ordered a heightened immigration presence in Siargao, warning foreign violators that sanctions and deportation await those who disrespect Philippine laws and culture. This directive follows a series of incidents involving disrespectful tourists, including Israelis, prompting widespread calls for stricter enforcement.

Commissioner Viado met with local government officials and law enforcement partners to address concerns regarding immigration violations, public order, and responsible tourism. While affirming the Philippines’ open-door policy for legitimate visitors, Viado emphasized that Filipino hospitality should not be exploited.

“Our hospitality should never be abused or mistaken for weakness,” Viado stated. “The vast majority of foreign visitors contribute positively to our economy and communities. However, foreign nationals who violate our immigration laws, threaten public order, or exploit our people will face appropriate sanctions, including deportation and blacklisting.”

The Commissioner acknowledged specific complaints from local authorities and residents, including overstaying foreigners, disorderly conduct, illegal work, and environmental violations. He underscored that immigration enforcement would be applied impartially based on conduct and violations, regardless of nationality.

To bolster enforcement, Viado announced the strengthening of the BI’s Siargao office. This enhancement aims to facilitate quicker responses to complaints, closer coordination with local government units (LGUs) and law enforcement, and more vigilant monitoring of immigration infractions.

Further initiatives include stronger collaboration between national government agencies and LGUs through direct reporting channels, joint operations, information sharing, and community-based monitoring. The BI will also conduct training and capability-building activities with local partners to enhance awareness and enforcement of immigration laws, improve violation detection, and streamline responses to community concerns involving foreign nationals.

This comprehensive approach, Viado explained, is part of the bureau’s ongoing commitment to robust immigration enforcement, border security, and inter-agency coordination.

“Our objective is simple: to protect our communities, uphold the rule of law, and ensure that the Philippines remains a safe, respected, and welcoming destination for responsible visitors,” Viado concluded.
