MANILA, Philippines – Life rarely follows a predictable runway, and for international fashion luminary and show producer Marc Cubales, the past two years have delivered an unexpected, fiery detour. 

A seemingly innocuous household chore in late 2023 dramatically escalated into a harrowing accident, threatening to extinguish his vision and plunging his world into a crucible of fear, pain, and profound introspection. 

This is the story of Marc Cubales’ battle for sight, his discovery of an unknown condition, and his triumphant re-emergence, “Stronger Than the Fire.”

The incident unfolded as Marc undertook the mundane task of burning old magazines and documents at his residence. 

Unbeknownst to him, discarded perfume bottles lay hidden among the refuse. “When the fire reached them, they started exploding,” Marc vividly recounts. “It was like fireworks on New Year’s Eve, but far more terrifying.”

In a heartbeat, the controlled flame became an uncontrolled inferno. Shards of glass and burning debris were propelled in every direction. 

Though Marc instinctively recoiled from the immediate blaze, the insidious damage had already been wrought. 

“The most dangerous part was when debris went into my eyes and damaged my cornea,” he shares, the gravity of the moment still palpable. “The doctors told me there was an 80 percent risk that I could lose my sight.”

Initially, the extent of the trauma was underestimated, with both Marc and his family believing he had sustained only superficial skin burns. 

However, as the days progressed, a more sinister reality began to unfold. “We initially thought it was just skin damage,” he explains. “But it kept getting worse. That’s when we discovered the real problem was inside the eye.”

What followed was an arduous and meticulously managed journey toward recovery. Marc found himself navigating a complex medical landscape under the vigilant care of a multidisciplinary team of specialists. 

“It took several doctors to manage everything,” Marc elaborates. “One handled the skin, another the eyes, and others specialized in different treatments. It wasn’t something one doctor alone could fix.” 

This comprehensive approach, while essential, proved to be not only physically exhausting but also financially crippling. “It cost a lot,” he admits candidly, revealing the limitations of even extensive insurance coverage. “Not everything was covered by insurance.”

Yet, amidst the overwhelming crisis, a remarkable revelation emerged. The very accident that threatened his vision became an unlikely catalyst for an early diagnosis of a pre-existing, unbeknownst eye condition. 

“I was diagnosed with eye diseases that cause color blindness,” Marc reveals. “In a way, the accident helped us discover it earlier. If we hadn’t found it when we did, I might have gone blind later.” This serendipitous discovery, though born from trauma, offered a strange solace and the potential for proactive management.

Despite this unforeseen silver lining, the emotional toll of the ordeal proved as heavy as the physical recovery. The looming specter of blindness triggered profound anxiety, forcing Marc to withdraw from the public eye that had once been his professional domain. 

“There were moments when I felt hopeless,” he confesses. “I couldn’t attend events because the light hurt my eyes. Sometimes I isolated myself because I didn’t want to be a burden.”

Marc Cubales is lounging in style alongside the brilliant wordsmith Obette Serrano.

In that dark chapter, a beacon of unwavering support shone brightest: his wife, Joyce Peñas Cubales. “Joyce never left my side. When I felt like giving up, she reminded me that life still had so much waiting for me,” Marc recounts with profound gratitude. 

“She took care of everything—from my diet to my treatment. She’s a naturopathic doctor, so she guided me through recovery step by step.” Her steadfast presence, combined with the encouragement of family and a tight-knit circle of friends, became the bedrock upon which Marc slowly began to rebuild his shattered confidence and find his footing forward. 

“Having people who truly care makes a huge difference,” he reflects. “They reminded me that I still had a purpose.”

Today, Marc Cubales is charting his gradual return to the vibrant world he once commanded – the fashion and entertainment industry. While he now embraces a more discreet, behind-the-scenes role, his intrinsic passion for creativity remains undimmed. 

“I’m giving myself—and show business—a second chance. I will never give up,” he declares, a testament to his renewed resolve. “Life will always bring challenges, but I’ve learned to be stronger. This is just the beginning of my second chapter.”

Beyond the glitz of showbiz, Marc is also meticulously cultivating new entrepreneurial ventures. Known among his friends for his culinary prowess, he is actively exploring the tantalizing prospect of opening a café or restaurant – a dream that harmoniously blends business acumen with personal passion. 

“I love cooking,” Marc shares, his eyes lighting up at the thought. “So, I’m thinking of putting up a coffee shop or maybe a small restaurant someday. This accident changed me. I’m more careful now, stronger now—and more determined to do better than before.”

Meanwhile, Joyce Peñas Cubales continues to pursue her own aspirations. Fresh from representing Miss Baesa, Quezon City, in the prestigious Miss Universe Philippines pageant, she remains open to re-entering the competitive arena of beauty pageants. “She’s very passionate about pageants,” Marc says proudly, “If she decides to compete again, I will fully support her.”

After facing the literal and emotional inferno, Marc Cubales now strides forward with an intensified appreciation for life’s preciousness. 

What once threatened to be a devastating setback has, through sheer will and unwavering support, been transmuted into a powerful turning point. In a profound way, the very fire that nearly consumed everything has instead ignited a remarkable second act – a testament to resilience, the enduring power of love, and a newfound purpose that continues to illuminate his path forward.
