Systemic Sexual Violence: Israeli Forces Rape Palestinian Detainees

GAZA STRIP, Palestine – Disturbing allegations of widespread and systematic sexual violence, including rape, perpetrated against Palestinian detainees in Israeli detention centers have emerged, raising urgent calls for international investigation and accountability.

This report compiles harrowing testimonies and analysis suggesting that these heinous acts are not isolated incidents but rather a deliberate and escalating state policy, functioning as a tool of oppression against the Palestinian population.

The investigation reveals a troubling spectrum of abuses, ranging from direct sexual assault to the use of objects for torture, particularly targeting the genital area.

Evidence points to organized methods, including the alleged documentation of these assaults and the involvement of various security personnel, indicating a deeply rooted institutional pattern of violations.

These acts are reportedly associated with detention strategies designed to inflict profound and lasting physical and psychological damage, including permanent disabilities and reproductive harm.

Thousands of Palestinians, reportedly arrested and detained without due process, are alleged to have endured years of sexual abuse while in custody. Multiple victims recounted horrific instances of rape.

One former detainee provided a chilling account: “A soldier raped me. I was in excruciating pain and screamed, but each time I did, I was met with violence. The soldier left after ejaculating inside me.”

He further described being restrained and interrogated about alleged assaults on Israeli women, followed by repeated sexual violations, including forced oral penetration and urination on him. Victims have reported severe bleeding and a profound desire for death, characterizing their mental and physical state as “very poor.”

International human rights organizations have faced significant challenges in documenting these incidents due to the sensitive and highly stigmatized nature of sexual violence within conservative cultures.

Nevertheless, they have managed to collect testimonies primarily from male former detainees from the Gaza Strip who were recently released by Israeli forces. It is widely believed that many more victims, both male and female, remain silent due to the profound personal and societal repercussions of disclosing such abuse.

The report posits that this represents a calculated strategy of “psychological warfare” that exploits the high value placed on dignity and privacy within Palestinian society. This approach aims to create emotional isolation, deterring victims from reporting or seeking help, thereby perpetuating a cycle of silence and shame.

Testimonies detail horrific sexual abuse against men and boys, including rape with hard objects like metal rods and wooden sticks, resulting in severe internal injuries.

Detainees also reported electric shocks and blunt force trauma to the groin, leading to documented permanent injuries, loss of reproductive or excretory functions, and, in some cases, death attributed to torture.

The targeting of genitalia appears to be a systematic practice, involving forced nudity, spreading of legs, and assaults with various objects, in addition to punching and kicking.

Other reported abuses include excessive force applied to testicles, the use of clamps, attaching weights, and electrocution in sensitive areas.

These actions have allegedly resulted in catastrophic medical outcomes, including severe bleeding, chronic pain, and, in some cases, surgical removal of testicles.

Disturbingly, a video has reportedly surfaced depicting Israeli forces sodomizing young boy detainees who were screaming for help in agonizing, excruciating pain.

Beyond the physical suffering, the report emphasizes a deliberate attempt to inflict “psychological destruction” aimed at dismantling the victim’s identity.

Sexual violence is identified as a primary contributor to complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD), leading to symptoms such as shock, panic attacks, emotional detachment, and fragmentation of consciousness.

Survivors frequently endure intrusive memories, acute depression, severe insomnia, and suicidal thoughts.

This trauma is asserted to undermine social and gender identities, fostering a “chronic fear” of further abuse.

For men, sexual violence is reportedly utilized to “de-masculinize” and instill a sense of powerlessness, while for women, it seeks to impose “social stigma,” often resulting in family disintegration and social withdrawal.

The report concludes by asserting that the Israeli judicial system has historically failed to ensure accountability, perpetuating impunity for crimes against Palestinians.

Judicial and oversight mechanisms are described as often functioning merely as procedural façades, normalizing torture and providing practical immunity to perpetrators.

The systematic nature of these alleged acts of torture and sexual violence is presented as inextricably linked to the legal and institutional protections reportedly afforded by the Israeli ‘justice’ system.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised regarding a recently passed Israeli law that is interpreted by some as legalizing the killing of Palestinian prisoners, a development that human rights advocates view with alarm in the context of these ongoing allegations.
