WASHINGTON, D.C. – The annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner plunged into chaos Saturday evening as Secret Service agents swiftly evacuated President Donald Trump from the stage amidst a volley of gunfire.

The incident, which President Trump later decried as an attack by a “would-be assassin,” unfolded at the Washington Hilton, a venue with its own dark history of presidential assassination attempts.

The tranquility of the black-tie gala, attended by the President, First Lady Melania Trump, senior government officials, and hundreds of media luminaries, was shattered when an armed individual breached a security checkpoint just outside the grand ballroom.

Armed guards immediately engaged the assailant, exchanging fire as panic erupted within. Guests instinctively dove under tables, seeking cover as Secret Service tactical teams swarmed the opulent event.

One Secret Service uniformed division officer was struck in his protective vest during the exchange of gunfire. While he was transported to a local hospital, authorities reported him to be in “good spirits,” escaping critical injury thanks to his ballistic protection.

The Assailant: Cole Tomas Allen Identified

U.S. law enforcement identified the shooter as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. Initial details about Allen paint a complex picture: his unverified LinkedIn profile describes him as a mechanical engineer, computer scientist, indie game developer, and part-time teacher.

He is a 2017 graduate of the California Institute of Technology with a mechanical engineering degree and is reportedly pursuing a master’s in computer science from Cal State Dominguez Hills, expected in 2025.

Allen was recently recognized as “Teacher of the Month” in December 2024 at C2 Education, a college test preparation firm. Public records indicate he is a registered voter with no party preference but notably donated $25 to ActBlue, a Democratic political action committee, in support of Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign in October 2024.

Security Lapses Under Scrutiny

President Trump, in a hastily arranged press conference, acknowledged that he initially mistook the gunfire for a dropped tray before realizing the gravity of the situation. He labeled the Washington Hilton a “not particularly secure” facility, igniting immediate questions about presidential security protocols at such high-profile events.

City officials confirmed that the suspect, who will face arraignment Monday on firearm and assault charges, appeared to have been a hotel guest and was armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives.

Washington Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll stated, “Law enforcement exchanged gunfire with the individual. A U.S. Secret Service uniformed division officer was struck in his vest… He appears to be in good spirits.”

As the incident unfolded, tactical teams with drawn firearms secured the stage where President Trump had been seated. Police immediately surrounded the hotel, and helicopters established an aerial perimeter.

Cabinet members were swiftly evacuated as confusion and concern rippled through the startled guests. Administration official Mehmet Oz was heard informing journalists of “shots fired upstairs” as he was rushed out by security.

A History of Threats and a Controversial Presence

This assassination attempt marks the third significant security breach involving President Trump. In 2024, a gunman opened fire at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing an audience member and slightly wounding the then-candidate. Months later, another individual was apprehended after a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle barrel near a West Palm Beach golf course where Trump was playing.

The Washington Hilton itself holds a grim place in presidential security history, being the site where President Ronald Reagan was shot by a would-be assassin in 1981.

Despite initial calls for the dinner to continue, organizers ultimately announced its postponement. This year’s gala was particularly noteworthy as the White House Correspondents’ Association extended an invitation to President Trump despite his consistent criticism of the media.

Unlike all other presidents for the past century, Trump had never attended the “Nerd Prom” – as the event is colloquially known – during his time in office. The dinner traditionally features a comedian who gently roasts the president, who in turn offers his own lighthearted remarks; however, no comedian was booked for this year’s event.

The incident underscores the persistent threats faced by public figures and reignites critical discussions about security measures at high-profile gatherings, even as authorities continue their investigation into the motives behind Cole Tomas Allen’s actions.
