MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) has pledged full scholarships to all six siblings of the late Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia. This decisive action, announced by AdDU President Fr. Karel San Juan following a poignant mass at the university’s Senior High School – Bangkal Campus, offers a crucial lifeline to a family grappling with immense loss and lingering questions surrounding Bobet’s untimely death.

Fr. San Juan revealed that the scholarship initiative fulfills a deeply held aspiration of Bobet Baterbonia himself. Amid heartfelt applause, the AdDU President highlighted that Bobet’s pursuit of a promising basketball career in Manila was fueled by his desire to secure his siblings’ education. “One of Bobet’s long-held dreams is finally becoming a reality,” San Juan affirmed, underscoring the university’s dedication to honoring his enduring legacy.

The tragedy of Bobet Baterbonia’s death continues to cast a long shadow, with his mother reportedly disputing the official “accident” classification. Despite this unresolved grief, the community united to celebrate the impactful, though tragically brief, life of a young man who touched many.

During his homily, Fr. Eric Anthony Escandor illuminated the depth of Baterbonia’s character, emphasizing that his relentless drive stemmed from profound love. Escandor painted a vivid portrait of a student who, despite academic struggles, underwent a remarkable transformation on the basketball court. “Academics were not Bobet’s strong suit… But when he entered the basketball court, he transformed. Bobet was a young man whose mind came fully alive the moment a basketball was in his hand,” Escandor preached, highlighting Bobet’s unique embodiment of “mens sana in corpore sano” (a sound mind in a sound body). Even under persistent rain, mourners converged on the AdDU Bangkal campus, a testament to Baterbonia’s profound community impact.

The Unquantifiable Loss: A Family’s Future Derailment

Beyond immediate grief, Bobet Baterbonia’s death represents an economic catastrophe for his family. While no monetary figure can truly compensate for a human life, a conservative financial analysis underscores the devastating impact on their future security.

As presented by Marge San of DZRJ’s “Mystical Buffet,” even with the most conservative assumptions, the projected lost earnings are staggering:

College Years (4 years)

Assuming potential earnings or allowances of ₱20,000 per month, the estimated loss totals ₱960,000.

Professional Basketball Career (Age 26-35, 10 years)

With a conservative estimate of ₱500,000 per month, the professional earning capacity is projected at ₱60,000,000.

This brings the total conservative lost earning capacity to an astonishing ₱60,960,000, approximately ₱61 million.

This figure notably excludes numerous factors that would undoubtedly multiply his true potential: salary escalations, lucrative endorsements, coaching opportunities, entrepreneurial ventures, inflation, performance bonuses, national and international team participation, retirement benefits, investments, or earnings beyond the age of 35. The economic void left by Bobet Baterbonia is undeniably far greater than this conservative projection.

His family has not only endured the emotional devastation of losing a child at a young age, but they have also been irrevocably deprived of decades of financial support, security, and upward mobility that his unique talent and anticipated professional career would have provided.

While the AdDU scholarships offer vital educational support for his siblings, the comprehensive impact of this loss underscores a profound injustice and a future tragically curtailed. The university’s benevolent act provides a critical pathway, yet the shadow of a life unfulfilled and a future undeniably richer for his presence remains.
