US, Tehran Confirm “Peace Deal” Reached, End Naval Blockade

BRISBANE, Australia – A landmark “peace deal” between the United States and Iran has been confirmed by both nations, culminating in a signing ceremony scheduled for Friday in Switzerland. This agreement signals a significant de-escalation of regional tensions, with leaders from both sides affirming its immediate implementation.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the accord, stating it is “now in place.” Simultaneously, US President Donald Trump confirmed the agreement’s completion and declared an end to Washington’s naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi echoed this sentiment, confirming the deal’s finalization and the cessation of hostilities across all fronts, including Lebanon.

Iran’s military hailed the outcome, asserting that the Iranian populace’s resolve compelled the US and Israel to “accept defeat and surrender.”

Global Reactions and Concerns

The announcement has garnered international attention and cautious optimism

US Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent voice on Iran, welcomed the agreement but expressed concern over potential differing interpretations. He stressed the necessity of congressional review and a vote on any deal with Iran.

European nations (Germany, Italy, France, UK) have indicated their readiness to lift sanctions on Iran, contingent on “clear, verifiable steps” regarding its nuclear program. Their joint statement emphasized that “Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon” and called for the unrestricted opening of the Strait of Hormuz, affirming Lebanon’s sovereignty.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretariat explicitly stated the deal includes an immediate and permanent suspension of hostilities on all fronts, particularly Lebanon, and the complete end of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports. The Memorandum of Understanding’s official signing is set for June 19, with negotiations for a final agreement to follow Iran’s fulfillment of its obligations.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres lauded the agreement as a “critical step” toward a peaceful resolution, congratulating both nations for establishing an “immediate and permanent ceasefire” and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the agreement, advocating for the unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and reiterating support for the Lebanese government in asserting control over Hezbollah.

Potential Spoilers and Strategic Implications

While the agreement marks a crucial turning point, potential challenges remain

Retired US General Mark Kimmitt identified Israel, Hezbollah, and potentially the US and Iran themselves as “spoilers” who could disrupt the fragile deal due to varying interests and unresolved issues, such as Iran’s long-range missile program and regional support.

Analysis from Ramallah highlighted that the deal’s implications will likely be viewed as a “strategic defeat” by Israel’s right wing. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s unfulfilled war goals in Lebanon and Iran, including promises of a new, pro-Israel Iran and the defeat of Hezbollah, could lead to significant political costs. The agreement might compel Israel to halt its military actions in Lebanon.

Economic Impact

The ceasefire deal immediately eased geopolitical tensions, leading to a drop in US fuel prices. Oil benchmarks Brent and US crude saw significant declines, reflecting the market’s removal of the “geopolitical risk premium” that had inflated prices.

This developing story underscores a significant shift in regional dynamics, promising an end to hostilities but also raising questions about the long-term sustainability of peace and the complex interplay of international interests.
