Sudan’s Crisis Escalates: 200,000 Displaced Amid Conflict and Floods

MANILA, Philippines – Sudan plunges deeper into a humanitarian abyss, grappling with escalating conflict, devastating seasonal floods, and critical global supply chain disruptions. The nation, already scarred by widespread displacement, now faces intensified suffering as renewed violence and environmental calamities converge, threatening to sever lifelines for millions.

While some individuals attempt to return to Khartoum amidst the chaos, the broader picture is one of an accelerating crisis. An alarming 8.6 million people are internally displaced across Sudan, alongside significant cross-border movements into neighboring countries.

“The warning signs are stark and undeniable,” asserts Director General Amy Pope. “Across Sudan, families are not only fleeing violence but are also losing access to fundamental necessities like water, electricity, and healthcare. Now, the relentless burden of destructive floods compounds their agony. Without immediate, concerted action to protect civilians and restore essential services, the scale of suffering will become immeasurable.”

The humanitarian response is further imperiled by severe delays in global supply chains, with the closure of the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz routes posing a grave threat to the delivery of vital assistance. This blockade intensifies pressure on an already precarious humanitarian operation, jeopardizing timely aid to a population teetering on the brink.

Surging Displacement and Infrastructure Collapse

The Kordofan region bears the brunt of escalating conflict. In North Kordofan, intensified fighting and drone strikes on El Obeid’s main electrical transformer have triggered prolonged power outages, crippling water pumping systems, health facilities, and telecommunications. This relentless violence has fueled a staggering 25% surge in displacement in Sheikan locality over the past eight months. Across the wider Kordofan region, over 200,000 individuals have been newly displaced since late 2025.

The violence is not isolated. In Blue Nile, clashes in and near Geissan have displaced an additional 7,800 people, with some seeking refuge across the border in Ethiopia. West Darfur has also witnessed a fresh wave of displacement, with nearly 18,000 individuals uprooted in the first half of August alone.

Floodwaters Compound the Crisis

Simultaneously, devastating heavy rainfall is wreaking havoc. In Tawila, North Darfur, nearly 1,350 homes were destroyed or severely damaged last week, displacing over 1,000 families. Additional flooding in Kabkabiya and Shangil Tobaya has forced dozens more families into temporary shelters, further stretching meager resources.

A Race Against Time for Aid Delivery

Despite these monumental challenges, the humanitarian community is urgently scaling up its response. Over the last 72 hours, 1,750 metric tonnes of humanitarian supplies, including 17,750 hygiene kits and 850 tents, have been delivered, directly benefiting 110,750 people in areas of most acute need. This crucial lifeline is projected to reach over 400,000 individuals in the coming days.

“Sudan is enduring one of the world’s largest displacement crises,” reiterates Pope. “The devastating convergence of conflict, infrastructural collapse, and overwhelming floods is pushing thousands of families to their absolute limit. We are unwavering in our commitment to deliver life-saving aid, but urgent, enhanced support is imperative to sustain critical shelter and aid pipeline operations before the situation deteriorates further into an even more profound catastrophe.”

With funding for vital shelter interventions experiencing a sharp decline, an immediate and substantial increase in support is urgently required to ensure the continued delivery of assistance to millions of affected individuals across Sudan.
