BRISBANE, Australia – In a chilling escalation of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment, Turkish authorities have launched a sweeping campaign, detaining dozens of individuals and raiding gay establishments and the homes of activists across 12 provinces. This coordinated operation, ominously dubbed “My Family is Safe,” is officially framed as a defense of “family values,” yet human rights advocates unequivocally condemn it as a state-led assault on the LGBTQ+ community and civil society.

The crackdown has seen law enforcement target prominent LGBTQ+ organizations, including Kaos GL. While same-sex relations are not illegal in Turkey, deeply ingrained homophobia, actively fueled by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s labeling of LGBTQ+ individuals as “perverts” responsible for declining birth rates, has created an increasingly hostile environment.

Mass Detentions and Raids

Istanbul prosecutors confirmed 26 arrests and the seizure of various items, including digital equipment. Separately, Ankara prosecutors announced the detention of 21 individuals in connection with an investigation into Kaos GL. Kaos GL itself reports a higher figure, stating that over 50 activists were detained, with more than ten removed from their homes in dawn raids.

Digital Censorship

Authorities have blocked numerous websites and social media accounts affiliated with LGBTQ+ organizations, demonstrating a concerted effort to silence dissent and control information.

Fabricated Charges

Kaos GL faces accusations of “obscenity” in online posts, with demands for the closure of their X (formerly Twitter) account and approximately 15 other LGBTQ+ organizations’ social media presence. This tactic appears designed to criminalize legitimate expression and dismantle community platforms.

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek, framing these actions within the “Decade of the Family” campaign, confirmed legal proceedings against over 160 individuals and organizations. However, the Turkish Human Rights Association unequivocally rejects the government’s rhetoric. In a powerful statement, they declared, “The real name of this operation is not ‘My Family is Safe’; it is state-led discrimination, politics of fear, and the dismantling of civil society.”
