Ilocos Sur’s ‘Ikkis ti Candon’ Tops Historical Float Competition

MANILA, Philippines — The Candon City, Ilocos Sur government has emerged as the winner of the Parada ng Kalayaan’s Historical Float Design competition.

The event was held on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park, Manila, as part of the nation’s Independence Day celebrations.

The province’s winning float, “Ikkis ti Candon,” captivated judges with its compelling depiction of a significant historical event.

The competition showcased a vibrant tapestry of Philippine history, with floats representing significant moments in the country’s struggle for freedom.

The Provincial Government of Iloilo secured the first runner-up position with its “Cry of Santa Barbara” float, while the City Government of Bago and the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental jointly claimed 2nd runner-up honors for their “Cinco de Noviembre Revolt” design.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) thanked all participating provinces for their creative and engaging contributions.

These included:

  • The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and the Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur, which presented “The 1891-1895 Battles of Marawi.”
  • The Provincial City Government of Cavite, City Government of Imus, and City Government of Dasmariñas, which collaborated on a float depicting “The Battle of Alapan, the First Flag Unveiling, and the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.”
  • The Provincial Government of Aurora, which represented “The Siege of Baler.”
  • The City Government of Malolos, Bulacan, which brought to life “The Malolos Congress and the First Philippine Republic.”

“The level of artistry and historical accuracy displayed by all participants was truly remarkable,” a representative from the NHCP declared.

“These floats serve as powerful visual reminders of our nation’s rich heritage and the sacrifices made for our independence.”

Details on the official awarding ceremony will be announced shortly.

The NHCP encourages everyone to continue discovering and sharing Philippine history through innovative and engaging mediums.
