MANILA, Philippines – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is cracking down on unregistered motor vehicles, warning owners that their vehicles will be impounded starting next month.

At the same time, the LTO announced that it would impose a hefty fine of P10,000 on drivers with unregistered vehicles.

The move was made following a series of deadly road accidents in the past months.

The agency stressed that it aims to improve road safety by removing potentially unsafe and unregistered vehicles from the streets.

The LTO is strengthening road safety under the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the guidance of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, according to LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II.

“Unregistered motor vehicles will be impounded until they pass roadworthiness inspection,” he said.

Last month, the LTO apprehended 20,307 unregistered vehicles nationwide.

Motorcycles and tricycles accounted for the majority of the apprehensions, with 12,808 motorcycles and 3,992 tricycles caught operating without valid registration.

“The over 20,000 apprehensions for the month of June is just a small fraction of the total number of motor vehicles that we want to have their registration renewed,” Mendoza said.

LTO-Calabarzon led the regions in apprehensions with 10,516, followed by LTO-Mimaropa with 2,925, and LTO Cagayan Valley Region with 2,591.

The data revealed that 850 private sedans, 1,852 vans (including 29 public utility vehicles), 47 passenger jeepneys, 10 buses, and 544 trucks were also apprehended.

Mendoza urged vehicle owners to comply with registration requirements to avoid penalties.

Renewing vehicle registration is crucial for ensuring roadworthiness, in line with the LTO’s ongoing “Stop Road Crash” campaign, he said.
