73 Palestinians Seeking Aid in Gaza Killed, 150 Injured

“Gaza, July 20, 2025: A massacre born of desperation. Driven by hunger, Palestinians seeking flour assistance were met with gunfire from Israeli forces. At least 73 lives were brutally taken, and over 150 were wounded. This is not a conflict; it is a humanitarian catastrophe. The world must demand accountability and an immediate end to the violence that continues to decimate this community.”

GAZA STRIP – At least 73 Palestinians were killed while 150 others were injured while trying to obtain assistance in Gaza on Sunday (July 20, 2025), according to the Palestinian health ministry.

The event unfolded as the humanitarian crisis escalated in the region.

Sixty-seven of the fatalities occurred in northern Gaza, with six reported in Khan Younis in the south.

It, however, remains unclear whether the deaths in the northern area stemmed from a single incident or multiple events.

The incident represents one of the highest casualty figures in a series of recent occurrences wherein individuals seeking help in Gaza were harmed.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged the incident, stating that their troops “fired warning shots in response to an immediate threat” after observing a significant gathering of Gazans in northern Gaza.

“The IDF is aware of reports regarding casualties in the area, and an investigation into the specifics of the incident is underway,” the Israeli military stated, without providing precise casualty figures.

Assistance warnings to residents in several northern Gaza areas, including Beit Lahia, Jabalya, and Beit Hanoun, designating them as “active combat zones” and “extremely dangerous,” have been raised.

“The IDF is conducting operations in these areas with considerable intensity. For your safety, access to these regions is strictly prohibited. Those who have been notified are cautioned,” said Avichay Adraee, IDF spokesperson for Arabic communications.

Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, described the situation as catastrophic, reporting that the facility was overwhelmed with casualties and individuals suffering from starvation.

“There has been a significant number of deaths and injuries among those seeking assistance, with ambulances and civilian vehicles continuously arriving, bringing the wounded and deceased from the northwestern regions of Gaza,” he added, noting that medical staff were collapsing due to severe malnutrition.

The Palestinian Red Crescent reported that its Al-Saraya Field Hospital in Gaza City received 120 injured individuals, some in critical condition, along with two dead.

The organization stated that Israeli forces targeted civilians waiting for aid from the Zikim area, north of Beit Lahia.

The hospital, which has a capacity of only 68 beds, was forced to open additional beds urgently to accommodate the influx of casualties.

Adding to the crisis, residents in Deir Al Balah in central Gaza were ordered to evacuate after the IDF distributed leaflets urging them to leave the area.

“We live in constant fear. We can’t sleep, eat, or drink. There is no flour or basic supplies, and we are starving,” lamented Thurayya Abu Qunneis, a resident of Deir Al Balah.

“We are perishing, and our children are suffering from hunger.”

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) has condemned Israel’s evacuation orders, asserting that they “endanger essential humanitarian and primary healthcare services… and are accelerating the systematic dismantling of Gaza’s already fragile healthcare system.”

The organization reported that numerous humanitarian offices were instructed to evacuate immediately, leading to the closure of nine clinics, five shelters, and a community kitchen.

The incident followed another tragic occurrence on Saturday (July 20, 2025), where at least 32 individuals lost their lives while seeking aid near a distribution point managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

The IDF stated that troops had fired warning shots after identifying suspicious individuals approaching during operational activities in the Rafah area.

According to Gaza’s Hamas-run Government Media Office, 995 individuals have died while attempting to access food near aid distribution points between May 27 and Sunday (July 20, 2025).
