MANILA, Philippines – “I resign not as an act of defeat, but as a testament to my dedication to transparency,” declared former House Speaker Martin Romualdez as he vowed to facilitate an impartial probe into anomalous flood control projects.

Romualdez announced his resignation on Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2025), driven by his commitment to facilitate an impartial investigation into corruption allegations linked to flood control initiatives.

His decision followed serious claims from contractors Sarah and Curlee Discaya, who accused him and other lawmakers of accepting kickbacks from flood control projects—allegations he has categorically denied.

While the Discayas admitted to lacking evidence directly tying Romualdez to the purported kickback scheme, their assertions have ignited widespread calls for a thorough inquiry.

“Let justice prevail,” Romualdez said.

He described his resignation as a crucial step to ensure that the Independent Commission for Infrastructure can conduct its work free from external pressures.

His resignation comes ahead of scheduled anti-corruption protests set for Sunday.

Deputy Speaker Ronaldo Puno disclosed that Romualdez turned down suggestions for a temporary leave of absence, opting instead for a full resignation to protect the integrity of the House.

However, he will continue to serve as a congressman, focusing on his constituents in Leyte.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who is Romualdez’s cousin, reiterated on Monday that no individual, including Romualdez and his associates, would be shielded from the independent investigation into infrastructure projects over the past decade.

As the investigation progresses, the political landscape in the country remains uncertain, with many awaiting clarity on corruption allegations and the future direction of House leadership.
