GAZA/TEL AVIV – As a fragile ceasefire takes hold, harrowing accounts from freed Israeli hostages are emerging, painting a grim picture of alleged abuse during their captivity by Hamas.

These testimonies, detailing beatings, starvation, and prolonged isolation, coincide with persistent allegations of abuse and torture of Palestinian prisoners held by Israeli forces, fueling concerns about potential war crimes and a cycle of retaliatory violence.

Anat Angrest, mother of freed Israeli soldier Matan Angrest, recounted her son’s alleged ordeal, claiming he was beaten unconscious by his Hamas captors after being abducted on Oct. 7, 2023.

“He remembers being beaten so badly that he lost consciousness,” she told Israeli media.

“They covered him with black sacks and dragged him away.”

Angrest, seized from his tank near Gaza, also described tunnel walls collapsing around him during airstrikes, leaving him buried under rubble.

Other freed hostages, including Ariel Cunio and Rom Braslavski, reported being held in complete isolation.

Cunio told Israel’s public broadcaster Kan that he spent his entire captivity alone, unaware for months that his brother and partner were still alive.

Braslavski, 21, told relatives he was allegedly starved, shackled, and forced to sleep barefoot on cold ground.

Survivors further alleged that Hamas guards ate in front of them while they went hungry, and that treatment grew harsher once the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) resumed ground operations.

Some hostages were reportedly never given shoes and were allegedly kept chained continuously.

Parents of Alon Ohel, 24, stated their son was moved through tunnels in Gaza and, in the weeks leading up to his release, was allegedly used as a human shield.

Omri Miran, 48, who was held for 738 days, told relatives he was moved between 23 different locations and spent time both in tunnels and above ground.

These accounts of severe deprivation and alleged abuse are surfacing alongside long-standing allegations of torture and inhumane treatment of Palestinian prisoners held by Israeli forces.

While independent verification remains challenging, human rights organizations have documented numerous cases of alleged physical and psychological abuse, including sleep deprivation, prolonged solitary confinement, and denial of medical care.

The recent prisoner exchange agreement, brokered by the United States and Egypt, saw the release of approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners in return for the release of Israeli hostages.

The agreement also stipulated the return of the remains of approximately 360 Palestinians, underscoring the enduring human cost of the conflict.

All freed hostages have been taken to hospitals across Israel for medical and psychological care.

Doctors report that many are suffering from extreme malnutrition, respiratory infections, and skin conditions potentially caused by prolonged confinement in dark, humid tunnels.

They are on restricted diets to prevent refeeding complications and remain under close psychiatric supervision.

Gaza Devastation, Mounting Palestinian Casualties

The devastation in Gaza is catastrophic.

The United Nations estimates that the conflict has resulted in over 67,000 lives lost and nearly 170,000 wounded.

Thousands of Palestinians, displaced by the conflict, are returning to find their homes reduced to rubble.

“Where do we go from here?” Fatima asks, her voice filled with despair as she stands before the ruins of her family home in Beit Hanoun.

“Everything is gone.”

Mountains of debris stand where houses once stood, families sifting through the wreckage, searching for remnants of their lives.

International Pressure Mounts for Investigation, Accountability

The harrowing accounts of hostage captivity, coupled with allegations of abuse of Palestinian prisoners and

the staggering civilian death toll, have intensified calls for impartial investigations into potential war crimes on both sides of the conflict.

The international community is demanding accountability and an end to the cycle of violence.

The International Criminal Court is actively investigating alleged war crimes committed by both sides.

Concerns persist about potential bias in reporting, with critics alleging that restricted access for international media has allowed the Israeli government to downplay the scale of Palestinian suffering.
