Bridge Collapse in Sichuan Raises Infrastructure Concerns

MA’ERKANG, China – A section of the newly constructed Shuangjiangkou Hongqi Bridge in Sichuan Province collapsed on Tuesday, sending concrete debris tumbling down a mountainside.

No casualties were reported.

Video footage circulating on social media captured the dramatic moment when a portion of the towering bridge, part of a national highway leading to Tibet, gave way.

The incident occurred in a seismically active region devastated by a major earthquake in 2008.

Local authorities in Ma’erkang (Barkham) stated that the bridge had been closed on Monday after cracks were observed on the road and surrounding slope.

A subsequent landslide triggered the collapse of the bridge approach and roadbed.

A detour is in place, but the estimated reopening time remains uncertain.

The incident raises questions about the quality and oversight of China’s rapid infrastructure development.

Over the past decades, the nation has invested heavily in highways, bridges, and rail lines, particularly in mountainous regions.

While the surge in spending has resulted in impressive engineering feats, it has also burdened local governments with significant debt.

The collapse of the Shuangjiangkou Hongqi Bridge underscores the need for rigorous safety standards and thorough inspections to ensure the long-term integrity of these vital infrastructure projects.
