KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip – As winter’s icy grip tightens around the Gaza Strip, the death of eight-month-old Rahaf Abu Jazar from hypothermia has ignited a firestorm of outrage and demands for immediate international intervention.

Rahaf’s tragic demise, discovered lifeless in her family’s flooded tent in Khan Younis, serves as a chilling indictment of the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the besieged enclave.

Her death is not an isolated incident but a symptom of a systemic failure to protect Gaza’s most vulnerable.

The Gaza Strip, already reeling from years of conflict and a crippling blockade, is now being battered by relentless winter storms.

Heavy rains and freezing temperatures have transformed displacement camps into fetid swamps, leaving hundreds of thousands of Gazans, the majority of whom are children, exposed to the elements.

“She was completely fine. I breastfed her last night. Then all of a sudden, I found her freezing and shivering,” Rahaf’s grief-stricken mother, Hejar Abu Jazar, recounted in a televised interview, her words echoing the despair of countless families.

The situation on the ground is catastrophic. Haytham Herzallah of Medical Aid for Palestinians paints a grim picture: “Many displacement sites are below street level, leading to rainwater and sewage overflows, exposing people to both rainwater and wastewater while living in shelters that offer little protection from cold and filthy water.”

Dr. Muneer al-Bursh, director general of the Health Ministry in Gaza, minced no words: “Every winter storm hitting Gaza pushes suffering far beyond weather… Cold and rain become a direct health threat amid overcrowding and severe shortages of food and medicine.”

A Humanitarian Crisis Compounded by Inaction

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that nearly 850,000 people are crammed into 761 displacement sites across Gaza, many of which are dangerously vulnerable to flooding.

These makeshift shelters offer little protection from the elements, leaving families exposed to hypothermia, waterborne diseases, and a host of other health risks.

Mahmoud Abu Salah’s lament, “Where are those who are responsible for us? They are in a deep sleep! We only have God,” encapsulates the pervasive sense of abandonment felt by Gazans.

Where is the International Criminal Court?

The question hangs heavy in the air: How many more children must die before the international community takes meaningful action?

The International Criminal Court (ICC), mandated to investigate and prosecute war crimes and crimes against humanity, has been conspicuously silent on the unfolding crisis in Gaza.

The ICC’s inaction raises serious questions about its commitment to upholding international law and protecting vulnerable populations.

Netanyahu Remains at Large

Adding insult to injury, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose policies have been widely criticized for exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, remains at large, seemingly immune to international scrutiny.

His government’s continued blockade of the Gaza Strip has severely restricted the flow of essential goods, including food, medicine, and building materials, further compounding the suffering of the Gazan people.

A Call to Action

The death of baby Rahaf must serve as a wake-up call to the world. The international community must:

  • Demand an immediate end to the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
  • Provide urgent humanitarian assistance to address the immediate needs of displaced families.
  • Hold perpetrators of war crimes and crimes against humanity accountable.
  • Demand the ICC commence an immediate investigation.

The lives of countless children hang in the balance.

The time for empty rhetoric is over. The time for action is now.
