MANILA, Philippines – Beyond its well-known medical assistance programs, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), under the leadership of General Manager Melquiades Robles, is expanding its mission to provide crucial financial support to students facing economic hardship. Robles, driven by a deep-seated commitment to national development and a personal understanding of financial struggles, is actively encouraging students in need to seek assistance from the PCSO, emphasizing accessibility and need-based support.

“The doors of the PCSO are open to those genuinely in dire straits and with nowhere else to turn,” stated Robles, highlighting a shift towards prioritizing need over connections within the organization. “We operate on the principle of providing a lifeline to those who need it most, ensuring that anyone can approach the PCSO for help without relying on personal acquaintances.”

While the PCSO is widely recognized for its “dugtong buhay” (extension of life) medical financial assistance program, which alleviates the burden of hospital bills and medication costs for countless Filipinos, Robles is actively promoting a parallel, yet equally impactful initiative: “dugtong edukasyon” (extension of education). This program offers vital financial aid to students struggling to afford tuition fees, preventing them from being forced to abandon their studies.

Robles’ dedication to this cause stems from his own experiences. He vividly recalls the humiliation and anxiety of facing expulsion due to unpaid tuition, a hardship he endured before laws were enacted to protect students from such practices. “I understand the feeling of being asked to leave class and being denied exams because of unpaid tuition fees,” he shared. “I experienced that myself.”

He is now urging students facing similar financial barriers to approach the PCSO and submit the required documentation. “If you are a student facing extreme hardship and unable to pay your tuition because you have nowhere else to turn, come to the PCSO,” Robles implored. “Simply submit the complete requirements, and we will assist you.”

While not a formal scholarship program, the “dugtong edukasyon” initiative serves as a critical safety net, providing essential financial support to students at risk of dropping out due to economic constraints. “This isn’t a scholarship, but if you’re a student struggling with your education, the PCSO is always there, ready to support you in pursuing your studies and achieving your dreams,” Robles clarified.

Robles emphasized the symbiotic relationship between the PCSO’s lottery operations and its profound social impact. “When you bet on the lotto, everyone wins,” he declared, highlighting the ripple effect of each ticket purchase. “While aiming to hit the jackpot, your twenty-peso bet is contributing to shaping the future of a student who is able to continue their studies and achieve their dreams because of the PCSO’s financial assistance. In essence, your bet is winning.”

He further underscored the potential return on investment in education, framing it as a contribution to both individual success and national prosperity. “Your twenty-peso bet can potentially bring millions in return to you and to the nation by helping a student succeed.”

PCSO Board of Directors member and renowned singer Imelda Papin, the “Jukebox Queen” celebrated for her patriotic anthem “Pilipino Tayo,” echoed Robles’ commitment, emphasizing the agency’s unwavering dedication to supporting Filipino families in times of need.

“PCSO stands as a partner to your families, ready to assist and provide support during your times of hardship,” Papin stated. “We want to assure you that you are not alone. As you strive to build a better future, PCSO remains committed to looking after your welfare and the welfare of your families.”

Robles reiterated the agency’s dedication to providing comprehensive welfare programs, reintegration assistance, and support services to Filipino families. The PCSO’s ongoing social responsibility initiatives, carried out in close collaboration with partner agencies, serve as a testament to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s commitment to providing timely assistance and compassion to Filipino families in need, reinforcing the nation’s gratitude and unwavering support for its citizens.
