Filipino Seafarer Robbed Inside Cristoforo Colombo Hotel in Argentina

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – What seemed to be a routine layover has turned into a devastating ordeal for a Filipino seafarer who was robbed in the lobby of a hotel.

The incident, captured on security camera, has sparked widespread criticism of Hotel Cristoforo Colombo’s security protocols and travelers’ vulnerability to petty crime.

Stranded and traumatized, Noelle Lerin now faces an uncertain future, prompting urgent calls for the hotel to be held accountable for its negligence and to provide comprehensive compensation for her losses.

She lost her income, vital professional documents, and other irreplaceable personal possessions.

On Jan. 9, between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., Lerin, a registered guest, was awaiting transportation to Ezeiza International Airport for a 2 p.m. flight and briefly left her bag unattended in the hotel lobby.

In that moment, a man seized the opportunity and stole her bag, which contained not only personal belongings but also vital documents and valuables.

Career Crippled

The loss of Lerin’s Philippine passport and seaman’s book has prevented her from returning to sea.

Without these documents, she is unable to travel or fulfill her professional obligations, jeopardizing her future employment and preventing her from earning a living.

Financial Ruin

Lerin’s loss of two ATM and credit cards also exposes her to identity theft and potential financial ruin.

Her financial security, which she painstakingly built, is now vulnerable to exploitation, adding to her distress and uncertainty.

Irreplaceable Loss

Beyond the financial losses, Lerin’s bag contained a collection of jewelry, including white gold and gold necklaces, rings, earring sets, and a Swarovski bracelet.

These were not mere trinkets; they were tangible reminders of cherished memories, hard-earned money, and personal connections.

Communication Severed

The theft of Lerin’s Redmi S11 mobile phone and Guess wristwatch has also severed her communication lifeline, leaving her isolated and exacerbating her distress in a foreign country.

“I discovered the theft when I got up to use the restroom and realized my bag was gone,” she recounted.

“I immediately alerted the hotel reception.”

Hotel staff promptly reviewed CCTV footage, confirming Lerin’s account and providing visual evidence of the theft.

The footage showed an unidentified man seizing the bag in a public space within the hotel’s premises.

Lerin contacted her manning agencies in the Netherlands and the Philippines for assistance and filed a police report.

The Philippine embassy in Buenos Aires, through Consul Armand Louis Dulay, has provided a temporary travel document to facilitate her return to the Philippines.

However, the loss of her passport and seaman’s book has impacted her ability to resume her career and earn a living.

“I am hopeful that authorities will investigate this matter thoroughly and recover my stolen cash, valuables, and travel documents,” Lerin said, clinging to the hope that justice will prevail.

The recovery of her documents is paramount to her future, representing a critical step toward regaining her livelihood and independence.

The incident has ignited serious concerns about security protocols at Hotel Cristoforo Colombo (Fray Justo S. M. de Oro 2747, Palermo).

While the hotel’s website ([www.hotelcc.ar](http://www.hotelcc.ar)) promotes upscale amenities and a prime location, the incident casts a shadow on its ability to guarantee guests’ safety.

As of this publication, the hotel has yet to address the theft or offer reassurance to its patrons.

Authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage, pursuing leads, and working to identify and apprehend the robber.

The case underscores the vulnerability of travelers and the critical need for vigilance, even in seemingly secure environments.

Legal experts say the hotel could be held liable for Lerin’s losses due to its negligence in providing adequate security, citing a potential breach of duty of care.

“Their negligence in providing adequate security directly contributed to the theft and its subsequent impact on her life. Justice demands that they bear the responsibility for restoring what they allowed to be stolen, including compensating her for the lost wages as well as providing restitution for the emotional and psychological trauma she has endured.”

Lerin’s story is a call to action, a demand for justice, and a plea for greater protection for those who depend on the world’s hospitality.
