NBI Arrests Online Media Personality in Romualdez Extortion Plot

MANILA, Philippines – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested online media personality Franco Mabanta, co-founder of Peanut Gallery Media Network (PGMN), for allegedly attempting to extort P350 million from Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed Mabanta’s arrest, stating that the funds were demanded to prevent the release of compromising videos purportedly linking Romualdez to a flood control scandal.

These videos were allegedly intended for release via Peanut Gallery Media Network, a digital platform co-founded by Mabanta. The NBI operation culminated in Mabanta’s arrest after he reportedly accepted P300 million in marked money.

Romualdez has yet to comment on these allegations, which have thrust Mabanta, a Filipino digital strategist and political commentator, into the spotlight.

Mabanta gained significant online influence during the 2022 national elections through political commentary and livestreams supporting President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

He co-founded Peanut Gallery Media Network (PGMN) in 2024, a digital media platform focused on politics, governance, and social issues.

Ombudsman Initiates “Master Plunderer” Probe, Freezes Romualdez’s Assets

Concurrently, the Office of the Ombudsman, under Jesus Crispin Remulla, has secured a Court of Appeals freeze order on the assets of Rep. Martin Romualdez, implicating him directly in an escalating flood control corruption scandal.

Originally targeting an unnamed legislator, a business associate, and a corporation, the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC)-secured freeze order has now explicitly named Romualdez as the alleged “master plunderer.”

This judicial order encompasses 25 bank accounts and 10 insurance policies registered in Romualdez’s name.

Ombudsman Remulla acknowledged the formidable challenge of investigating a powerful, wealthy government official.

He also decisively rejected Romualdez’s team’s attempts at inhibition, asserting his constitutional mandate to prioritize justice for victims of crime. “There is no such thing as inhibition,” Remulla stated, rebuking the legal maneuver.

The Court of Appeals’ order extends to 27 bank accounts, 10 insurance policies, and one investment account of Romualdez’s alleged business associate, alongside two bank accounts, seven property accounts, and one real estate property of the implicated corporate entity.

The court found probable cause linking these assets to serious offenses, including plunder, bribery, and violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act. Remulla announced that this is the first of “around five to six cases” expected within the next two weeks, indicating an imminent, systemic crackdown on the alleged siphoning of public funds.

The Shadow of a Dynasty: Romualdez’s Controversial Lineage

Ferdinand Martin Gomez Romualdez is a central figure in a powerful Philippine political dynasty, closely linked to the Marcos family.

He is the son of Benjamin “Kokoy” Romualdez and the nephew of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, making him a first cousin to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Romualdez served as Speaker of the House from July 25, 2022, to September 17, 2025.

The Romualdez and Marcos families have a history marred by plunder allegations. The Marcos family has faced accusations of amassing billions in ill-gotten wealth during Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s presidency.

Recoveries exceeding ₱170 billion (approx. $3.4 billion) in assets, including Swiss bank accounts and New York properties, have been achieved through Supreme Court and Sandiganbayan rulings confirming plunder.

Imelda Marcos was convicted of seven counts of graft for maintaining Swiss private foundations involving nearly $200 million. While some civil cases against the Marcoses have been dismissed, often citing “unexplained inaction” or technicalities, allegations of using “cronies,” direct treasury raids, and accepting kickbacks have persisted.

The current investigation into Martin Romualdez, directly linked to this controversial lineage, carries profound national significance. It addresses contemporary corruption allegations and re-examines the enduring challenge of kleptocracy within Philippine politics.

The NBI’s investigation into Mabanta and his alleged accomplices continues, with further details expected. This unfolding story highlights the critical intersection of online influence, political figures, and potential criminal activity, raising significant questions about digital media ethics and the integrity of public discourse.
