BRISBANE, Australia – Australia is reportedly aligning with Canada’s proactive efforts to forge a deeper alliance with the European Union, signaling a potential strategic recalibration for both nations in the global trade landscape. This development arises as Canada navigates an escalating trade dispute with the United States.

Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell affirmed this alignment, stating, “We are on the same page,” in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. Farrell indicated Australia’s keen interest in Canada’s diplomatic trajectory.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney recently articulated Canada’s pursuit of a “unique alliance” with the EU, clarifying that this does not entail full membership. This follows a Wall Street Journal report exploring the concept of Canada achieving “associate member” status within the bloc.

While Minister Farrell did not elaborate on specific Australian initiatives for deeper EU engagement or the potential form such a relationship might take, Australia has actively sought to diversify its trade relationships. This strategic imperative has been amplified by the imposition of U.S. tariffs on various Australian exports, despite a long-standing security alliance and free trade agreement with Washington. A request for comment from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade received no immediate response.

Discussions between Canada and the EU reportedly encompass a broad spectrum of cooperation, including the free movement of goods, services, and workers in critical sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, defense, and vital minerals. This would effectively blur the traditional EU border for Canadian entities. The talks also extend to collaborative infrastructure projects, including undersea cables, data centers, cloud storage, satellite networks, and facilities to transport Canadian energy to Europe.

The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed officials familiar with the discussions, highlighted Prime Minister Carney’s regular engagement with EU leaders, notably French President Emmanuel Macron, regarding the feasibility of visa-free living and working arrangements for Canadians within the EU.

Minister Farrell, while open to various new arrangements with the EU, reportedly expressed reservations about additional fiber-optic cable projects due to the immense distances involved. He underscored a broader philosophical divide in global trade, asserting, “The world is dividing into protectionists and free traders. It’s indisputable that Australian prosperity of the last 50 years has all been about our engagement with the world.”

Australia and the European Union cemented a free trade agreement in March after eight years of negotiations. This landmark agreement eliminates tariffs on nearly all goods and is expected to facilitate EU access to crucial Australian minerals.
