MANILA, Philippines – Despite the challenges faced by media professionals in local communities, their livelihoods are earned through honorable and ethical means.

The brutal killing of a media member represents not only a direct attack on the freedom of the press but also a grave threat to democracy.

In Albay, a radio broadcaster was ambushed and subsequently succumbed to his injuries shortly after undergoing surgery.

Noel Bellen Samar, 54, who worked with Kadunong ITV and DWIZ, was shot multiple times by unidentified assailants while driving in Guinobatan town.

The Philippine National Police reported that Samar was targeted around 9 a.m. on a national highway.

Though doctors managed to stabilize him initially, Samar’s condition deteriorated, leading to his death at the Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center.

The motive behind the killing remains under investigation, with authorities exploring potential links to his work as a broadcaster.

Albay police director Col. Noel Nuñez revealed that surveillance footage indicated two suspects on motorcycles had trailed Samar before the ambush.

Law enforcement is actively pursuing leads, with a person of interest identified, as they strive to bring the perpetrators to justice.

P50,000 reward

In a strong condemnation of the violence, Albay 3rd District Rep. Adrian Salceda expressed outrage over the shooting, saying that such acts have no place in a civilized society.

He offered a reward of P50,000 for information leading to the arrest of the gunman, reinforcing the declaration that any attack on the media is an attack on the very freedom of a democratic society.

“I vehemently condemn this act of violence. Attacks on the media threaten our liberties and undermine the political integrity of Albay,” Salceda stressed.

His commitment to justice reflects a broader call for accountability in the face of escalating violence against journalists.
