PASAY CIT Y, Philippines – A 26-year-old seafarer learned a costly lesson about the gravity of airport security protocols when the Metropolitan Trial Court, Branch 47, found him guilty of violating Presidential Decree No. 1727, the “Anti-Bomb Joke Law.”

The ruling, handed down on June 10, 2026, by Presiding Judge Jose Janello A. Covarrubias, imposes a hefty fine of Php10,000.00 and serves as a powerful deterrent against frivolous remarks concerning explosive devices.

The conviction stems from an incident on May 26, 2026, at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2. During the boarding process for a flight to Butuan City, the passenger, whose identity is being withheld, jokingly declared that his bag contained a “bomb.”

This ill-conceived jest immediately triggered a heightened security response from aviation personnel, causing significant disruption to standard airport operations and potentially delaying numerous travelers.

PBGEN Dionisio B. Bartolome Jr., Director of the PNP Aviation Security Group, underscored the unwavering commitment to public safety: “Individuals who recklessly engage in bomb-related jokes will inevitably face severe legal repercussions. Airport safety is our paramount concern, and the public must grasp that such jokes are never permissible. Our laws are meticulously crafted to penalize these disruptive actions and maintain the integrity of our aviation security.”

This case serves as a critical reminder that humor has no place in the context of airport security. Authorities emphasize that any mention of bombs, even in jest, is treated as a credible threat, prompting immediate and rigorous security protocols. 

Such incidents not only incur significant financial penalties and criminal records for the perpetrators but also waste valuable security resources and cause unnecessary anxiety and inconvenience for other passengers.
