Heroism Amid Horror: Chris Lorenz Fabian’s Ultimate Sacrifice

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – In a moment etched into the annals of tragedy, 15-year-old Chris Lorenz Fabian, a courageous Boy Scout, deliberately shielded his classmates from a school shooter, paying the ultimate price with his life. This profound act of heroism unfolded at San Jose National High School, a scene of unspeakable horror that has left an indelible scar on the community and shattered countless dreams.

The chilling chaos of the attack was partially captured in viral video footage widely disseminated across social media. The visuals depict Chris, a Grade 10 student, bravely approaching a classroom door. As two fellow students unleashed a merciless barrage of gunfire, Chris pressed himself against the door in a desperate attempt to block their entry. In a heartbreaking instant, a bullet tore through the door, striking Chris.

“He closed the door, and the assailant was pulling it open, but he didn’t let go,” recounted Aleth Fabian, Chris’s grandmother, her voice heavy with grief. “The assailant, enraged, fired through the door. The bullet pierced his hand, then his heart and lungs.”

Another haunting video shows Chris moments later, critically wounded and bleeding.

“Did he just go to school to die like that?” Chris’s mother, Erbea Fabian, cried out, her anguish palpable.

Aleth Fabian shared Chris’s final, heart-wrenching words to his classmates: “They said he was a hero because if he hadn’t done it, many more of his classmates would have died. He told them, ‘Leave me, go, save yourselves.'” Chris’s younger brother, present during the attack, also sustained injuries while fleeing the school.

The Fabian family vehemently refutes any baseless claims of Chris being a bully. “He was not a bully. Many bullets were fired. If he was a bully, he would have targeted the one who allegedly bullied him. Why target all the students?” asserted Lola Aleth. “My grandson was kind; he bullied no one.”

The families of all three deceased, including Chris’s, and those of 15-year-old Joyancee Separa and 14-year-old Ayessa Nicole Dazo, are united in their demand for justice. They seek accountability not only from the two minor suspects but also from their parents, emphasizing their undeniable responsibility in this tragedy.

Joyancee Separa, a Grade 10 student, tragically captured the unfolding horror within her classroom in a viral video. Her mother, Jennylyn Badoria, expressed profound sorrow and regret: “I just want to—I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Yancee. I’m sorry, Yans. She can no longer tell me what happened to her; she can no longer report it to me. She’s gone.” Joyancee’s father added, “I thought my child was safe because she was at school. It turns out that’s where her life would end.” Joyancee, the second of three siblings, harbored dreams of academic excellence. “She told me, ‘Mama, I’ll make sure of it. I want to be an honor student,'” Jennylyn recalled.

Ayessa Nicole Dazo, 14, was also captured on video being carried out of the school after being shot. Her mother, Ariet Dazo, echoed the desperate plea for justice: “Justice. They should be imprisoned. It won’t bring back my child’s life.”

Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez emphasized the critical need for a comprehensive investigation: “It is important that we conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the true motive. Let’s not speculate.” He also confirmed that crucial support for the victims’ families is being provided by local government and various agencies.

Beyond the three fatalities, the rampage left 20 individuals wounded. The Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality is scheduled to hold a hearing on July 1st. Senator Risa Hontiveros stated that the hearing will rigorously investigate the role of online platforms in the proliferation of violent ideologies and their efforts to protect young people from potential abuse.

This harrowing event serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to safeguard our youth. The memory of Chris Lorenz Fabian, who bravely sacrificed his life so others could live, will forever stand as a powerful testament to the extraordinary courage that can emerge in the darkest of times, inspiring a call for action and a profound reflection on the value of every young life.
