Kyiv Bombarded: 17 Dead, Ukraine Demands Interceptors

BRISBANE, Australia – In Ukraine, a relentless barrage of Russian missiles and drones unleashed on Kyiv and its surrounding region overnight on August 5, 2026, claimed the lives of at least 17 people and left dozens wounded, according to authorities. The Ukrainian capital, unable to intercept any incoming missiles, is intensifying its pleas for more U.S.-made Patriot interceptors, critical for protecting civilians from Russia’s escalating attacks.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly linked the day’s fatalities to the absence of ballistic interceptors, stating, “Ballistic interceptors are what could have saved the lives of those killed today.” He later confirmed discussions with NATO chief Mark Rutte regarding the urgent need for these defense systems. Zelenskyy emphasized the critical nature of international resolve, stating on Facebook, “Literally every day, people’s lives here in Ukraine depend on the resolve of our partners in Europe and the United States.”

This recent assault marks a significant escalation in Russia’s attacks on the Ukrainian capital, increasingly involving salvos of difficult-to-intercept ballistic missiles, causing widespread damage and fear. The attacks generated a pall of smoke over the capital by sunrise, as AFP journalists observed, with fires igniting in multiple locations.

While Ukraine’s air force reported successfully downing 98 of 115 drones launched by Russia, no missiles were intercepted. This critical vulnerability has prompted renewed urgency from Ukrainian officials, including EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, who condemned the “horrible atrocities,” and French President Emmanuel Macron, who called for heavier sanctions against Russia.

Zelenskyy highlighted a concerning threefold drop in air-defense missile supplies from allies compared to 2025, echoing previous warnings about severe air-defense shortages. This shortfall coincides with Moscow’s record-breaking missile launches against Ukraine in July, as an AFP analysis revealed.

The United Nations has reported a concerning uptick in civilian deaths throughout 2026, underscoring the brutal reality of the four-and-a-half-year conflict, which shows no signs of a peace resolution.

In a grim development in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, a primary Kremlin target, authorities on Wednesday ordered hundreds of families with children to evacuate Kramatorsk, a major Ukrainian-held city. Governor Vadym Filashkin cited a deteriorating security situation, deeming it “unacceptable to leave children under the constant threat of Russian attacks.”

The overnight Russian attacks primarily targeted warehouses, infrastructure, and a railway station. A strike on a train station on Kyiv’s eastern edge resulted in eight fatalities. Logistics centers of the general merchandise chain Epicentr were hit, with one hub completely incinerated and an employee killed. Additionally, three individuals working at a postal sorting center were killed, and online retailer Rozetka reported its third attack in a week.

Moscow claimed its strikes targeted “transportation, logistics, and distribution centers” in and around Kyiv, alleging their involvement in “the storage, delivery of various weapons and military cargo, as well as in the production and distribution of unmanned aerial vehicles.”

This recent Russian assault follows a series of Ukrainian attacks on the network of Russian online retailer Wildberries since mid-July, which has reportedly killed at least eight people and crippled a significant portion of the company’s storage capacity. Kyiv accuses the e-commerce giant of storing drone parts and aiding the Russian military.
