JERICHO, West Bank, Occupied Palestinian Territory – The Israeli army has deployed three combat battalions to the West Bank city of Jericho and its surrounding areas, specifically to safeguard Israeli armed settler families who have forcibly occupied eight Palestinian homes in Area C. This significant military deployment follows the unauthorized seizure of these residences by settlers, who moved in without prior coordination with or notification to Israeli security authorities.

Hebrew-language media, including Yedioth Ahronoth, reported that the sudden arrival of these settler families took both the Israeli army and the 96th Division, responsible for the Jericho area and eastern border, by surprise. This unexpected occupation has compelled the army to reallocate troops from other critical security functions, including border control efforts aimed at preventing smuggling along the Jordanian frontier.

The newspaper indicated that the settlers’ actions mirror a pattern previously observed in Hebron, where homes were reportedly acquired from Palestinians, followed by rapid occupation without pre-arrangement with security officials. However, in previous instances in Hebron, the Israeli military had intervened to evacuate settlers until property purchase documents were fully verified.

In the current Jericho incident, the occupied homes are situated in Area C, a territory under full Israeli civil and military control. The newspaper asserts that the land in question is designated as state land rather than privately owned by Palestinians.

This deployment underscores a concerning trend of military resources being diverted to secure illegal settler activities, further entrenching the occupation and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territories.
