GENEVA, Switzerland — As conflict between Israel and Iran enters its second week, the international community is grappling with escalating airstrikes, missile exchanges, and ambiguous signals from Washington.

US President Donald Trump, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, fueled further uncertainty by refusing to rule out US military intervention.

“I may do it. I may not do it. Nobody knows what I’m going to do,” Trump was quoted as saying.

His comments came amid a flurry of diplomatic actions and escalating violence.

Foreign ministers from Germany, France, and Britain are set to meet with their Iranian counterpart to discuss Iran’s nuclear program and ensure it remains solely for civilian purposes, according to a German official.

However, these efforts are overshadowed by ongoing military actions and potential wider conflict.

Netanyahu: Israel Making Progress

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a televised address, declared that Israel is “methodically addressing” the threats posed by Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities.

He thanked Trump for his “unwavering support,” further solidifying the perception of a coordinated strategy between the two nations.

Trump’s Shifting Stance

Trump’s stance on Iran has appeared to be fluctuating.

While initially advocating a swift diplomatic resolution, he has increasingly hinted at possible US military involvement, even raising the specter of targeting Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

When questioned about this possibility, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed reluctance to discuss such a scenario.

Internally, Trump’s administration is reportedly divided, with discussions underway on potential joint strikes with Israel against Iranian nuclear sites, including the heavily fortified Fordow facility near Qom.

Military experts suggest that Israel may require US assistance to effectively target the site.

Iran Responds with Defiance

In a televised address, Ayatollah Khamenei condemned Trump’s rhetoric, warning that any US military involvement would result in “severe repercussions.”

“The Iranian nation will not surrender,” Khamenei declared.

With the escalating conflict, Iranian authorities have imposed temporary internet restrictions to lessen panic and control the dissemination of information.

Reports said residents of Tehran, a city with 10 million people, have attempted to flee the city due to the escalating Israeli airstrikes.

Civilian Casualties, Regional Instability

The ongoing missile exchanges have resulted in civilian casualties on both sides.

Iranian projectiles have reached Israeli territory, causing injuries from debris, while Israeli airstrikes have reportedly targeted Iran’s police headquarters and missile production facilities.

Both sides have reported significant civilian casualties.

Iran has also threatened to disrupt global oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, further escalating tensions in the region.

Its ability to retaliate through regional proxy forces, such as Hamas and Hezbollah, has been hampered by recent Israeli military successes.

Divisions Within the Republican Party

The possibility of US military intervention has exposed deep divisions within the Republican Party.

While some hawks support a strong response to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, others, aligned with Trump’s “America First” doctrine, are wary of entangling the US in another Middle Eastern conflict.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has publicly expressed skepticism about Iran’s nuclear weapons program, stating that while Iran’s enriched uranium is at an all-time high, experts do not believe it is working on a nuclear weapon.

These comments reportedly sparked a rift with Trump, who believes Iran is close to acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Conservative Republican Rep. Thomas Massie has joined Democrats in introducing a bill to block Trump from engaging US forces in unauthorized hostilities with Iran without congressional approval.

As the conflict intensifies, the world watches anxiously, hoping for a de-escalation before the situation spirals out of control.
