GAZA CITY – The devastating toll on children in the Israel-Palestine conflict has risen as the battle between the two nations intensifies.

Reports show that nearly 19,000 children have been killed amid gunfire between the two warring forces.

The situation remains volatile as Israeli forces escalate airstrikes in the city, trapping thousands of civilians in their homes, buildings, and other facilities while the fate of a proposed ceasefire hangs in the balance.

The overall Palestinian death toll has surpassed 62,000 since the conflict began nearly two years ago, with children representing a staggering proportion of casualties, according to Gaza’s government media office.

Displaced children are seeking refuge in overcrowded United Nations shelters and schools, struggling to survive amid dwindling resources and constant fear.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has warned that “no place is safe for children in Gaza.”

The agency cited the dire conditions within the refugee camps, where widespread starvation is exacerbated by restrictions on essential aid and medical supplies.

UN-run schools, intended as safe havens, have also been overwhelmed by thousands of displaced individuals.

“Ceasefire (should start) now,” a UNRWA official implored in a recent statement.

UNICEF reported that since the breakdown of a previous ceasefire in March, an average of over 540 children have been killed each month.

The Al Jazeera news organization recently captured the tragic final moments of 12-year-old Amna al-Mufti, who was killed by Israeli forces while fetching water for her family.

Reports indicate that at least 51 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since early Tuesday, including eight aid seekers fatally shot near US-backed aid distribution sites.

Hospitals in Gaza are struggling to cope with the influx of casualties from strikes on tents sheltering displaced individuals, with fatalities reported in Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah.

Despite international calls for restraint, Israeli forces have intensified their offensive, particularly in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood.

Over 450 residential blocks in Zeitoun have been destroyed, with operations now expanding to the Sabra area.

The UN described the situation in these areas as “very dangerous and unbearable,” with ongoing artillery shelling exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Efforts to broker a ceasefire have gained momentum, with Qatar confirming that Hamas has responded positively to a proposal for a 60-day truce and a partial exchange of captives for prisoners.

The proposed agreement includes the release of 200 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 10 captives and the remains of 18 deceased individuals, a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces, and increased humanitarian aid.

While Israeli officials are reviewing the proposal, media reports suggest divisions within the government on the terms.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may be hesitant to agree to a limited ceasefire, believing the current military strategy is yielding results.

The plight of vulnerable populations, including individuals with disabilities, remains critical, with many unable to evacuate due to the ongoing violence and displacement orders.

Adding to the crisis, malnutrition and starvation are on the rise.

Recent reports indicate that at least three individuals have died from hunger in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 154 adult and 112 child fatalities due to malnutrition since the conflict began.

The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, urging all parties to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians and pursue a resolution that will end the devastating cycle of violence.
