MANILA, Philippines – A relic from World War II emerged from the depths of history on Monday (Sept. 22, 2025) as workers uncovered a torpedo at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport construction site.

The missile, which included its main body, energy section, and tail section found separately, was immediately taken to the Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEGROUP).

The discovery occurred when a backhoe operator inadvertently struck the explosive device, prompting authorities to alert the Mobile Patrol Security Unit of the PNP AVSEGROUP.

The Aviation Security Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Canine Unit arrived at the scene.

Bomb experts secured the unexploded ordnance and transported it to the Philippine National Police headquarters at Camp Crame in Quezon City for assessment and safe disposal.

“The quick action taken by civilians was instrumental in the success of this operation, enabling our officers to act swiftly and prioritize public safety,” said Police Brig. Gen. Jay Cumigad, director of AVSEGROUP.

Authorities are now checking the area to ensure no other unexploded ordnance is present.
