MANILA, Philippines – Tears of joy and relief streamed down faces at NAIA Terminal 1 on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, as 312 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) arrived home, greeted by an unexpected serenade from the iconic Jukebox Queen, Imelda Papin. The “Bagong Taong Salubong sa OFWs” (New Year’s Greeting for OFWs) event, a collaboration between the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), transformed the airport terminal into a haven of warmth and recognition for these modern-day heroes.

Beyond the practical assistance provided, the presence of Papin, a voice deeply embedded in the Filipino cultural landscape, resonated with a profound emotional depth that touched every soul. The event was more than just a welcome; it was a powerful acknowledgment of the sacrifices endured by these returning laborers.

“Seeing Imelda Papin, my idol, is a dream come true!” one OFW exclaimed, her voice thick with emotion. “Her songs are the soundtrack to our lives overseas. To see her here, welcoming us home, is overwhelming.”

Papin, along with OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne “PY” Caunan, PCSO General Manager Melquiades Robles, PCSO Chairman Judge Felix P. Reyes (Ret.), and other PCSO Board members, personally greeted each OFW, offering handshakes, smiles, and a tangible sense of national pride.

However, it was Papin’s music that truly unlocked the floodgates of emotion. Her timeless hits, like a familiar embrace after years of separation, offered solace and a profound sense of belonging. For many, her iconic ballad, “Isang Linggong Pag-ibig” (A Week-Long Love), held particular significance.

“That song… it’s our story,” whispered another OFW, her eyes glistening. The melancholic lyrics, which chronicle a whirlwind romance that burns brightly before tragically fading, mirrored the ephemeral nature of relationships forged in the isolating landscape of overseas work. For countless single OFWs, it echoed their own experiences of longing, loss, and the enduring search for connection.

Adding to the tangible warmth, the PCSO’s “Charitimba” packages provided immediate assistance, serving as a concrete symbol of the nation’s unwavering appreciation.

“PCSO stands as a steadfast partner to your families here in the Philippines, ready to assist and provide support while you continue to work abroad,” affirmed PCSO General Manager Melquiades Robles. “We want to assure you that you are never alone… PCSO remains deeply committed to looking after the welfare of your families back home.”

The “PCSO Bagong Taong Salubong sa OFWs” transcends a simple welcome; it’s a powerful testament to the nation’s unwavering support for the sacrifices made by OFWs. Amplified by Imelda Papin’s joyful presence and undeniable cultural impact, the event was a national embrace, a celebration of resilience, and a poignant reminder that the Philippines remains a sanctuary, a home where OFWs are cherished, celebrated, and always welcomed back with open arms. Their sacrifices are etched forever in the nation’s heart.
