BRISBANE – Australian authorities have intercepted a sophisticated, custom-built vessel designed for international drug smuggling, striking a significant blow against global organized crime.

Six crew members of the MV Raider face charges of conspiracy to import a commercial quantity of drugs into Australia following the seizure of an estimated one tonne of cocaine destined for the Australian market.

The 40-meter MV Raider, capable of carrying six tonnes of cocaine, first drew international attention in January when the French navy intercepted it off French Polynesia, reportedly discovering and disposing of 4.8 tonnes of cocaine.

The vessel then entered Australian waters in late February, where it was met by the Australian Border Force and NSW Police.

After being turned away from an Australian port, the MV Raider issued a distress call on March 12, 2026, due to critical supply shortages.

The crew was subsequently detained, and a comprehensive search of the vessel and their electronic devices allegedly revealed evidence of drug trafficking. Investigators located three professionally installed “smuggler hides” suspected of previously containing up to six tonnes of cocaine, with an estimated street value in Australia between $1.8 billion and $2.4 billion.

AFP Commander Brett James highlighted that criminal syndicates employ “extreme lengths” with custom-built “motherships” to infiltrate Australia’s borders, often risking lives.

This operation underscores strong domestic and international partnerships in disrupting the illicit drug trade. The six crew members are scheduled to appear in court today, March 30.
