BRISBANE, Australia – Passengers aboard an American Airlines Boeing 737 endured a terrifying ordeal when flames erupted from the aircraft’s engine moments after takeoff from Myrtle Beach International Airport in South Carolina. The dramatic incident, captured on video by a passenger, occurred after the aircraft collided with birds, forcing an immediate emergency return.

American Airlines flight 1760, bound for Charlotte, North Carolina, experienced the catastrophic bird strike shortly after its ascent. Witnesses on the ground reported hearing multiple loud popping sounds, followed by vivid orange flashes emanating from the plane’s left wing. Simultaneously, a pilot in another aircraft reported seeing birds enter the troubled engine.

Inside the cabin, passenger Patrick Gotwalt filmed the harrowing scene as bursts of fire visibly shot from the compromised engine. The pilot promptly issued a “Mayday” call to air traffic control, declaring an “engine problem.”

Emergency crews at Myrtle Beach rapidly prepared for the distressed aircraft’s return, simultaneously discovering bird remains scattered across the runway, confirming the cause of the engine failure.

Despite the shocking visual of a mid-flight inferno, the highly trained flight crew executed a flawless emergency landing back at Myrtle Beach. All 172 passengers and crew disembarked safely, with no injuries reported.

American Airlines confirmed the aircraft has been taken out of service for inspection by its maintenance team and arranged a replacement flight for the affected passengers. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident.

This alarming event underscores the critical dangers of bird strikes to aviation safety, highlighting the professionalism of aircrews and the robust safety protocols that ensured a safe outcome in the face of a potentially catastrophic engine failure.
