U.S. Strikes Iranian Radar Sites Amid Escalating Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz

BRISBANE, Australia – The United States has launched targeted strikes on Iranian military sites, marking a significant escalation in tensions around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The strikes, confirmed by U.S. Central Command (Centcom), were described as “self-defense actions” in response to “aggressive Iranian activities,” including the downing of a U.S. drone over international waters.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) swiftly retaliated, announcing it had targeted an airbase reportedly used by U.S. forces.

Simultaneously, Kuwait, which hosts a U.S. military presence, reported its air defense systems actively engaging hostile missile and drone attacks. These incidents represent the third known exchange of hostilities within a single week in the volatile region.

Centcom reported conducting “self-defense strikes on Iranian radar and command and control sites for drones” in the city of Goruk, near Iran’s southern coast, and on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. These actions, carried out on Saturday and Sunday, were aimed at Iranian military air defenses, a ground control station, and two drones deemed to “pose a clear threat to ships transiting through regional waters.” No American personnel were reported injured in these operations.

The IRGC, through Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency, stated its counter-attack targeted a communications tower on Sirri Island in the Gulf, approximately 40 miles (65 km) from Iran’s southern coastline, and an airbase it claimed the U.S. utilized for its strikes. The Iranian military warned of a “completely different” response should U.S. aggression persist.

Meanwhile, Kuwait’s military confirmed on Monday it was “confronting hostile missile and drone attacks,” though specific interception locations were not disclosed. The state news agency KUNA reported that air raid sirens blared across the country. Last week, Tehran also targeted an airbase in Kuwait following earlier U.S. airstrikes, which the U.S. asserted were designed to prevent Iranian maritime activities from laying mines in the crucial shipping channel.

These latest developments unfold against a backdrop of faltering ceasefire negotiations. U.S. media outlets reported that President Trump requested modifications to the terms of a potential deal, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz shipping channel and the removal of highly enriched uranium. Iran’s chief negotiator has asserted that Tehran will not accept any agreement without the full safeguarding of Iranian rights.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical choke point through which approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments pass. The ongoing hostilities and de facto trade embargo are contributing to upward pressure on international fuel prices.
