Japan Hit by Deadly Quake: Mall Explosion Claims Two Lives

BRISBANE, Australia – A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s southern Kumamoto Prefecture, triggering an explosion at a major shopping mall that tragically killed two women in their twenties. The devastating quake, which also claimed another life in a separate building collapse, has left a trail of destruction, knocking out power to thousands of homes, rupturing critical infrastructure, and sparking fears of further instability.

Rescuers worked through the night at Aeon Mall Kumamoto, where the post-quake blast occurred. Eight individuals were pulled from the rubble, with two women confirmed dead and another in critical condition. Five others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency fire rescue teams, police, and Self-Defense Force personnel focused search operations on areas where calls for help were received.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, speaking from Tokyo, acknowledged the dire situation: “We have already been informed that people have been injured. Power outages and fires have occurred in some areas, and there has also been damage to roads and bridges and the collapse of buildings.”

The affected region, still recovering from a deadly quake a decade prior, now faces renewed upheaval. Approximately 300,000 people were instructed to seek refuge in evacuation centers as aftershocks continued to rattle Kyushu, Japan’s southwestern island.

Eyewitnesses described the mall explosion as a huge impact, with shattered glass panels following a large cloud of smoke billowing up. “The area around was in a state like volcanic ash was falling.” Footage revealed one side of the mall, home to approximately 200 stores, completely torn away, exposing steel beams and scattering debris across the parking lot. Mall operator Aeon confirmed that customers and employees were evacuated immediately after the initial tremor, with authorities investigating a possible gas explosion as the cause of the subsequent blast.

The impact extended beyond the mall. A chimney collapse at a Nippon Paper Industries factory left multiple people unaccounted for. Two hospitals reported treating over 50 injured individuals, some in serious condition. Several passengers on high-speed trains were also injured during the quake. Authorities are responding to numerous incidents of building collapses and fires.

Critical infrastructure suffered significant damage. Major highways were fractured by large cracks, leading to traffic snarls. Rail and air services were suspended, grounding flights and halting bullet trains.

The economic ramifications are immediate. Global chipmaker TSMC, Sony, and Fujifilm evacuated workers from their plants. While TSMC reported that its site was unaffected and operations were gradually resuming, semiconductor equipment manufacturer Tokyo Electron suspended operations at its two Kumamoto factories through Wednesday. Honda also announced a temporary halt to production at its motorcycle factory in the area.

The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 20 kilometers south of Kumamoto City, central Kyushu’s largest city with a population of about 700,000. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a warning for residents to remain vigilant for further strong quakes and the risk of landslides for the next week.

Despite the widespread disruption, Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed that no irregularities were reported at nuclear power stations in the region. Kyushu Electric Power stated that 48,000 homes lost power.

This latest disaster recalls a massive earthquake in Kumamoto ten years ago, which claimed 275 lives and injured over 2,700, damaging thousands of buildings, including the city’s historic castle. Compounding the current crisis, authorities are warning residents of a significant risk of heatstroke, with temperatures forecast to reach 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit) on Wednesday.
