A 13-year-old student’s life was brutally ended, fatally stabbed by a 14-year-old schoolmate over a mere P10 change. This senseless act, unfolding on a Friday afternoon, has left a community reeling and ignited urgent questions about escalating youth violence and safety within educational institutions.

Police reports detail the horrifying event that transpired in front of a fourth-floor classroom at Las Piñas National High School. The victim, identified as “A.D.O.,” and the alleged assailant, “M.J.E.,” were embroiled in an altercation during recess. The dispute tragically escalated when the 14-year-old reportedly brandished a bladed weapon, inflicting a fatal wound to the victim’s left chest.

Faculty members immediately rushed the grievously injured student to Las Piñas District Hospital. Despite their swift actions, he was pronounced deceased at approximately 4:53 p.m., leaving a profound void and a community in shock.

The motive behind this devastating act has been officially clarified as a dispute over a P10 change. The assailant allegedly gave the victim P20 to buy water, but when the victim returned without the change, an argument ensued. “He was saying that he left the change at the canteen, but the [assailant] wouldn’t believe it,” stated Las Piñas acting police chief Col. Fermin Armendarez III. “They had a short argument before the suspect pulled out a fan knife and stabbed the victim in the upper portion of his left chest.”

While authorities confirm that “pertinent documents were being prepared for filing a criminal complaint against the child in conflict with the law (CICL),” the incident underscores the critical need for comprehensive solutions to address violence among youth and ensure the safety of students within our schools. The Department of Education has urged the public to “refrain from sharing unverified reports or sensitive media online out of respect for the grieving family and the minors involved.” They also assured that “appropriate actions and administrative reviews are being undertaken regarding the security measures and protocols.” School guidance advocates are providing psychological first aid and psychosocial support to students and staff.

This harrowing event, alongside a rising tide of school violence cases, has drawn strong condemnation. Senator Mark Villar highlighted the urgent need for robust safeguards in schools through measures like Senate Bill 2321, or the proposed Learning Institution’s Guaranteed Threat Avoidance and Safety (LIGTAS) Act. This legislation seeks increased police visibility, coordinated threat assessments, direct emergency hotlines, immediate parent notification during emergencies, and the provision of adequate first aid, trained medical personnel, and security guards. “Our schools must always be places of safety, learning, and hope – not places where our children are exposed to violence and danger,” Villar emphasized. “No student should ever have to fear for their safety while pursuing their education and dreams.”
