Iran’s Execution Spree: UN Alarmed, ICC Silent

MANILA, Philippines – Iran, a nation plagued by systemic hypocrisy, kleptocracy, and kakistocracy, has seen the UN Human Rights Chief issue a grave warning regarding the alarming surge in executions across Iran since March. This massive violation of human rights unfolds while the International Criminal Court remains conspicuously silent.

Volker Türk revealed that at least 56 individuals have been executed on national security-related charges since March 19, with 27 cases directly linked to the January anti-government protests. Over 100 more face imminent execution on similar charges, while drug-related executions persist at an alarming rate. Iran, already the world’s second-most prolific executioner after China, recorded at least 2,159 executions last year—the highest figure since 1981, including 45 suspected dissidents.

Activists fear that Iranian authorities are intensifying the use of capital punishment against opponents following January’s protests, which saw thousands killed and tens of thousands detained amid the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

Türk emphatically urged Iranian authorities to cease all executions and abolish the death penalty, asserting its incompatibility with modern justice. He further expressed profound concern over the persistent lack of fair trial and due process guarantees, noting credible allegations of confessions coerced under torture and other ill-treatment. Disturbingly, some executions have been carried out publicly, mere weeks after arrest. In one egregious instance, twelve defendants were reportedly sentenced to death after a single, three-hour closed-door hearing.

While the Iranian government has yet to comment, it has previously defended capital punishment as reserved for “the most severe crimes.” Recently, Iran’s judiciary executed two men accused of spying for Israel, allegedly providing intelligence on sensitive military and security sites during ongoing regional conflicts. The executions of 19-year-old Arvin Kheirkhahan and two other protest-related detainees, Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi, underscore the brutal crackdown. These individuals were among twelve sentenced to death for “enmity against God” and “corruption on Earth” in connection with the killing of four law enforcement officers. UN human rights experts have condemned these sentences, highlighting their violation of fair trial standards due to single, closed-door hearings lacking clarity on individual responsibility.
