MANILA, Philippines – The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, now in its tumultuous 15th day, has devolved into a charged spectacle of heated exchanges and urgent appeals for professional conduct. A palpable “generational divide” was cited as a primary catalyst for escalating tensions during a critical cross-examination, forcing Presiding Officer Chiz Escudero to intervene and demand civility.

Adding fuel to the already volatile proceedings, a controversial social media post by a prosecution lawyer has ignited a fresh wave of condemnation, pushing the boundaries of courtroom decorum into the digital realm.

The initial flashpoint erupted during the cross-examination of key witness Xylene Mae Del Campo. House private prosecutor Lorna Kapunan and defense counsel Kristine Ferrer engaged in a sharp, public verbal dispute, prompting Presiding Officer Escudero to issue a stern admonition.

He explicitly appealed to both legal teams to prevent a perceived generational gap from further exacerbating the already strained atmosphere, underscoring the necessity for mutual respect and a focus on legal arguments over personal animosity.

However, the decorum of the proceedings suffered a significant blow with the emergence of a highly contentious social media post. Lead defense counsel Atty. Sheila Sison vehemently condemned a post by prosecution counsel Atty. Amando Ligutan, which reportedly commented on the “misleading question” exchange between Kapunan and Ferrer.

Sison’s rebuke was unsparing: “I find it troubling that a private prosecutor would do this,” she declared, emphasizing the solemn demands of the impeachment court for strict decorum and its explicit prohibition against participants making public commentary on the ongoing case.

 “It’s inappropriate to do that to a fellow member of the bar,” she added, forcefully highlighting the perceived breach of professional ethics and judicial integrity.

Despite a swift motion from Lead House prosecutor Gerville Luistro for Ligutan to be recognized, Presiding Officer Escudero unequivocally dismissed the request. In a significant revelation, Escudero disclosed that the clerk of court has been diligently monitoring public statements from both legal teams, observing a concerning pattern where “one side has been crossing the line many, many times.”

He further announced that a formal, comprehensive ruling is currently being drafted. This forthcoming ruling, which will include a stern warning and a direct order addressing these recurrent breaches of conduct, is slated for issuance at the next trial session. 

Critically, this ruling will also encompass his earlier directive for both camps to designate new, independent spokespersons who are not actively serving as counsel in the ongoing proceedings, in a clear attempt to insulate the public narrative from the direct involvement of the litigating parties.

The escalating tensions and unprecedented challenges to judicial decorum now cast a long shadow over the integrity and legitimacy of the Vice President’s impeachment trial.
