MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has confirmed the highly anticipated opening of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi on December 11, 2026, solidifying the emirate’s status as a global capital of arts and culture.

Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the museum rises on Saadiyat Island as a defining landmark—rooted in Gulf heritage yet open to the world. Its dynamic silhouette of ten sculptural cones, reaching 88 meters, combines striking form with functional efficiency: natural ventilation and shading systems reduce energy demand while creating an instantly recognizable presence. Inside, 30 galleries spanning 11,600 square meters of interior space and 23,000 square meters of outdoor exhibition areas will showcase one of the world’s most ambitious collections of modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present.

More than just an exhibition space, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is envisioned as a living platform for cross-cultural dialogue. Departing from rigid chronology or geography, its curatorial approach weaves together interconnected narratives—abstraction, identity, place, language, and storytelling—illuminating shared artistic currents across continents and generations. Built over 17 years in partnership with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the collection balances local and global voices, presenting art not as isolated objects but as a dynamic, evolving conversation.

His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, described the milestone as “a testament to Abu Dhabi’s belief that culture is the most enduring bridge between peoples.” Dr. Mariët Westermann, Director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, praised the museum as “a source of wonder, a hub of connection, and a place of curiosity and joy for all.”

Joining the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, and other institutions in the Saadiyat Cultural District, the Guggenheim anchors one of the world’s most concentrated clusters of cultural excellence. It completes the global network of Guggenheim museums alongside New York, Venice, and Bilbao—extending the foundation’s mission to a region that has stood at the crossroads of civilization for millennia.

When the doors open this December, visitors will encounter an experience centered around discovery: open pathways, immersive spaces, and art that invites every individual to see themselves reflected in the stories told. Further details on acquisitions, commissions, and programming will be released in the coming months.
