Israel’s War on Truth: Journalists Targeted, Media Silenced, Evidence Erased in Gaza

GAZA STRIP, Palestine – The Israeli military’s actions in the Gaza Strip extend beyond the devastating loss of Palestinian lives and infrastructure; they encompass a systematic assault on the truth itself. International accusations highlight Israel’s deliberate targeting of journalists, destruction of media infrastructure, and manipulation of information, raising urgent calls for accountability for those silencing critical reporting.

These actions aim to dismantle media, erase truth, and silence witnesses. Accusations against Israel for restricting press coverage and manipulating information are mounting, demanding accountability for the unprecedented targeting of journalists and media institutions.

These allegations coincide with former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu facing criticism for undermining press independence during his tenure. UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese warns that media disinformation and the marginalization of victims’ voices could actively conceal crimes against Palestinians.

Reporters Without Borders: Over 200 Journalists Killed in Gaza

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has urged Israeli voters to defend press independence, highlighting the systematic targeting of Palestinian journalists. RSF reports that since late 2022, Netanyahu’s policies have undermined journalistic foundations and the public’s right to information by attacking critical media, restricting foreign press, and smearing opposing journalists.

RSF’s documentation reveals that the Israeli army has killed over 200 journalists in the Gaza Strip in three years, with 67 directly linked to their journalistic work. Attacks on journalists in the West Bank are also escalating, as exemplified by the October 16 assault on Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine. RSF notes a “Trumpian” approach, favoring pro-government media and attacking critical journalists, citing a July AI-generated clip of Netanyahu discrediting “fake news” while portraying journalists Ben Caspit and Raviv Drucker as “patients.”

Albanese: Targeting Witnesses, Destroying Media Infrastructure to Conceal Crimes

In a UN briefing on “Truth Under the Rubble… Media in the Time of Genocide,” Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese detailed Israeli violations against Palestinian journalists since October 2023.

In an interview, Albanese accused Israel of manipulating news and presenting a distorted reality. She asserted that the systematic targeting of journalists, their families, and media infrastructure is a deliberate strategy to eliminate witnesses and hide evidence.

Albanese reported that 300 journalists have been killed by the Israeli army in Gaza, with 70 targeted in retaliation for their work. Additionally, 710 family members of journalists have been killed, and 80% of Gaza’s media infrastructure has been destroyed.

Albanese further highlighted Israel’s intensified restrictions on press coverage, including prohibiting news publication, blocking reporting on specific events, and manipulating or banning tens of thousands of news items—an average of 21 per day.

Accusations of Western Media Complicity in Covering Up Crimes

Albanese criticized international media outlets like the BBC, The New York Times, and CNN for marginalizing victims’ voices and prioritizing the Israeli narrative over facts regarding crimes against Palestinians.

She stressed that concealing or downplaying victims’ suffering while focusing on the narrative of perpetrators could constitute complicity in covering up crimes.

Albanese called for investigations into media performance and accountability for any role in withholding information. She underscored that the lack of international will perpetuates impunity, despite available evidence. Citing international tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, Albanese affirmed that accountability is possible, even for media outlets participating in crimes.

“Journalism is Not a Crime”: Documenting Palestinian Journalists’ Testimonies

The French magazine Blind has published “Journalism is Not a Crime,” a book compiling the works of 60 Palestinian journalists and photographers documenting the war on Gaza from October 7, 2023, to the present. The book honors 20 martyred journalists through their photos, last messages, wills, and posts.

Blind highlights that the ban on international media entry into Gaza forced local journalists to bear the immense burden of documenting destruction and violations, despite displacement, loss of homes and relatives, food shortages, and constant threats to their lives.

Photo editor Sarah Lynn stated that the horrific loss of journalists’ lives demands recognition. She explained the challenges in preparing the book due to destroyed homes and devices, weak internet, and lost original photos, necessitating the use of screenshots as the only remaining copies.

Blind warns that a failure to condemn the killing of journalists risks normalizing their targeting in Gaza and other conflict zones. Denying journalists safe working conditions deprives the world of truth, making crime documentation and perpetrator accountability significantly harder.
