FORT STEWART, Georgia – An Army sergeant was taken into custody following a shooting incident here at Fort Stewart military base earlier on Thursday (Aug. 7, 2025), leaving five soldiers wounded.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect, identified as Quornelius Radford, allegedly used his own gun in the attack.

“This morning, shortly before 11:00 AM (local time), an active-duty soldier assigned to Fort Stewart shot and wounded five of his fellow soldiers,” declared Brig. Gen. John Lubas, commanding officer of the 3rd Infantry Division, during a press conference.

“Thankfully, all are in stable condition and expected to recover.”

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.

Victims Stable, Some Undergo Surgery

The wounded soldiers are reported to be in stable condition. However, three required surgical intervention, while two were transferred to the Memorial Health University Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center in Savannah, for further treatment, according to a hospital spokesperson.

“We are grateful that the injuries sustained were not life-threatening, and we are focused on providing the best possible care to our soldiers,” said Lubas.

Suspect a Logistics Sergeant

The alleged 28-year-old shooter is an active-duty automated logistics sergeant assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, also known as the Spartan Brigade, which has a distinguished history of military engagement.

Authorities confirmed he has no combat history.

Law enforcement sources revealed that Radford was previously arrested in May for driving under the influence of liquor.

Base Lockdown Lifted, Investigation Ongoing

The incident prompted a lockdown at Fort Stewart and nearby Liberty County schools.

However, the lockdown at schools has since been lifted, with officials stating there was no more threat based on information from local authorities.

Ron Peavey, a truck driver delivering goods at the fort during the lockdown, described the base as “eerily quiet.”

The shooting occurred in the area designated for the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team.

Fort Stewart, located approximately 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is responsible for training and deploying both active and reserve Army units.

Shooting Reflects Broader Trend

The incident at Fort Stewart came amid ongoing gun violence in the United States.

According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, there have been over 260 mass shootings in the US this year, a figure that, while concerning, represents a decline compared to previous years.
