Peso Appreciation Affects OFW Remittances

MANILA, Philippines — The strengthening of the Philippine peso against the US dollar has significant repercussions for about four million families of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) worldwide, as their remittances have diminished in value.

Currently, OFW families are experiencing a loss of approximately ₱1,760 for every $500 sent home and ₱1,056 for every $300.

This decline has a notable impact on their monthly financial planning, with the exchange rate shifting from a peak of ₱58.693 to just ₱55.15 per dollar.

The peso appreciation can be attributed to fluctuations in global trade and economic policies, particularly under the administration of US President Donald Trump, whose unpredictable tariff strategies have destabilized the US economy and contributed to the dollar’s decline against various currencies, including the peso.

Remittances from abroad play a crucial role in the Philippine economy, with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas reporting $38 billion in remittances for 2024.

Coupled with the growth of the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, these funds have significantly contributed to the country’s economic development from 1975 to 2025.

As the dollar value is projected to remain in the ₱54-₱55 range, OFW families may need to tighten their budgets over the next three to four months.

This situation is exacerbated by ongoing trade tensions, as Trump’s confrontational stance toward China, Canada, and the European Union has led to increased tariffs on exports.

While a stronger peso may benefit consumers and importers by providing more purchasing power, the adverse effects on exports and OFW families are likely to be felt in the long run.
