SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – What began as a pioneering direct flight between Manila and Sydney six decades ago has blossomed into a vital artery connecting two nations.

In 1965, a Philippine Airlines (PAL) DC-8, christened “Mabuhay,” touched down in Sydney, carrying 86 passengers and ushering in an era of unprecedented connectivity.

Today, the Manila-Sydney route, initially served by just two weekly flights, thrives as a daily link facilitated by multiple airlines, fostering vibrant exchanges between two dynamic cities and close allies in the Asia-Pacific region.

More than just a conduit for air travel, the Manila-Sydney connection has evolved into a living bridge for families, businesses, cultural exchange, and community ties, all while showcasing the unique “Heart of the Filipino” hospitality.

To commemorate this significant milestone, PAL has announced a week-long anniversary sale from Oct. 13 to 19.

The promotion offers Australians the opportunity to experience their own “Mabuhay Moment,” with round-trip fares from Sydney to Manila starting at just $929 for travel commencing after Feb. 1, 2026.

“Philippine Airlines is proud to have flown generations of Filipinos and Australians across the skies between Manila and Sydney,” said PAL President Richard Nuttall.

“Since our inaugural service in 1965, we have carried millions of passengers, shared countless ‘Mabuhay Moments,’ and helped connect businesses, families, and travelers alike. As we look to the next 60 years, PAL remains committed to delivering world-class service and care that comes from the heart,” Nuttall declared.

The enduring popularity of the route underscores the deep connections between the Philippines and Australia—two neighbors sharing more than many Australians may realize.

Beyond the millions who have traversed this aerial bridge, the Philippines beckons as a vibrant destination, boasting over 7,000 islands where world-class beaches meet burgeoning innovation, and where friendship, family, and unparalleled hospitality are deeply ingrained in the culture.
