Foreign Lawbreakers Face Deportation as BI Intensifies Crackdown

MANILA, Philippines – The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is intensifying its crackdown on foreign nationals who violate Philippine laws, particularly those engaged in illegal work or abusing local hospitality. Commissioner Joel Viado’s recent statements and swift actions, following the arrest of ten foreign nationals in Siargao, signal a definitive shift towards stringent enforcement.

“The Philippines remains a welcoming destination for legitimate tourists, investors, students, and residents who respect our laws and our people,” stated Commissioner Viado. “However, foreign nationals who exploit our hospitality through immigration violations or unlawful activities will face immediate deportation, blacklisting, and other governmental sanctions.”

This resolute stance follows intensified efforts to strengthen BI’s presence in Siargao. Commissioner Viado emphasized that these operations are a direct outcome of recent dialogues with local government officials, underscoring a unified approach to safeguarding communities and preserving the nation’s reputation.

The BI’s multi-pronged strategy includes expanded independent enforcement operations, enhanced coordination with Local Government Units (LGUs) and law enforcement agencies, and improved intelligence sharing. Crucially, the Bureau is also rolling out comprehensive immigration law enforcement and capacity-building programs for local partners to bolster the detection and reporting of violations.

“These successful BI operations demonstrate the concrete results of stronger coordination between the Bureau, LGUs, and our law enforcement partners,” Viado affirmed. “We will continue intelligence-driven immigration operations to ensure our tourist destinations remain safe, orderly, and welcoming for responsible visitors.”

Commissioner Viado underscored that BI enforcement is predicated solely on violations of law, entirely independent of nationality, race, or religion. He extended gratitude to LGUs, law enforcement agencies, tourism stakeholders, businesses, and community members for their pivotal cooperation and vigilance.

“Protecting our communities and preserving the integrity of our tourist destinations is a shared responsibility,” Viado concluded. “The collective power of national government, LGUs, law enforcement, the private sector, and citizens ensures effective law enforcement, making the Philippines safe, orderly, and appealing for everyone.”
